PREVIEW: No. 15 men's lacrosse tangles with RV Franklin Pierce

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team will host Franklin Pierce University under the lights at Grappone Stadium on Wednesday, Apr. 6 at 7 p.m.

Saint Anselm (4-3, 2-2 NE10), ranked 15th in NCAA Division II by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, is coming off a thrilling 14-13 victory over Bentley on Saturday. Franklin Pierce (5-1, 2-1 NE10) is receiving votes in the USILA national coaches' poll.

Sophomore Nick Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal with eight seconds remaining to cap a five-goal comeback over No. 16 Bentley last time out. Senior CJ Hart (Reading, Mass.) stopped a career-high 22 shots on goal, helping the Hawks to the comeback win.

Franklin Pierce cruised past American International by a 20-5 margin on Tuesday, Mar. 29 in its most recent action. The team's lone loss in 2022 came at the hands of Bentley on Saturday, Mar. 26 by a 16-4 margin.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Saint Anselm is stymieing the opposition on clearance attempts, allowing safe passage up field just 71.8% of the time to rank third in all of NCAA Division II. The Hawks are also 10th in the country in turnovers per game (15.86).
  • Bentley held a 56-42 advantage in shots on goal in its loss at Saint Anselm. The Hawks committed just seven turnovers compared to 15 from the Falcons. Saint Anselm was one-for-one on its lone extra-man opportunity while Bentley was two-for-four with the additional player.
  • Junior Jack Robinson (Wilbraham, Mass.) leads Saint Anselm with 26 points of offense, handing out 15 assists to date while potting 11 goals – his 2.14 assists per game are second in the NE10 and 16th in NCAA Division II. Graduate student Sean Tomaszewski (Arlington, Mass.), the team's leader in goal scoring, by just one point of offense (20-5=25).
  • Junior Ryan Slattery (North Andover, Mass.) leads Saint Anselm defensemen in ground balls (27) and caused turnovers (11). Senior Kyle Fisher (Nashua, N.H.) has caused 10 turnovers with just one miscue of his own in 2022.
  • Among active NCAA Division II coaches, Michael Sciamanna ranks 14th with a 65.1% winning percentage. Since coming to Saint Anselm prior to the 2016 season, he has won 54 of a possible 83 games – the Hawks are 20-5 in their last 25 games.

SCOUTING FRANKLIN PIERCE

  • The Ravens lead the nation in clearing percentage (92.9%) and rank fourth in scoring defense (7.17). Franklin Pierce owns a 6.33 scoring margin, ranking second in the NE10 behind Pace (7.75).
  • Stephen Eli is averaging 3.67 goals per game for Franklin Pierce, scoring 22 goals with three assists for 25 points (22-3=25). Owen McCormack has potted 11 goals with nine assists for 20 points (11-9=20). Eric Bua, Jr. is the team's leader with 29 ground balls.
  • Nathan Taylor owns the nation's third-best goals-against average (6.95) and his save percentage of 60.8% is seventh in the country and fourth in the NE10.
  • Nick Cattabriga, a freshman defenseman on the Franklin Pierce roster, is the brother of Jon Cattabriga (Barnstable, Mass.), a junior attackman for Saint Anselm.
  • Devin Callahan is in the midst of his first season as the Head Coach at Franklin Pierce. He replaced Rick Senatore, the former Saint Anselm men's lacrosse coach, and departed with a career record of 64-83 from 2010 through the 2021 season.

ALL-TIME vs. FRANKLIN PIERCE

  • The Hawks are 21-3 all-time against Franklin Pierce dating back to the very first meeting on Apr. 9, 1998.
  • Saint Anselm enjoyed a 14-game winning streak against the Ravens to open the all-time series.
  • Last season, the Hawks posted a 15-6 victory over Franklin Pierce at home – Griffin Shoemaker '21 posted three goals and an assist for four points (3-1=4), matching then-freshman Noah Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) and his one goal off three assists.
