MANCHESTER, N.H. – The No. 20 Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team fell to No. 3 Adelphi University in a battle of top-20 teams nationally on Saturday, 12-8.
With the loss the Hawks fall to 6-2 on the season and 4-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Panthers remain undefeated, improving to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in league games. Saint Anselm is back in action on Tuesday, Apr. 5 when nationally-ranked Assumption University comes to the Hilltop for a NE10 battle.
Sophomores
Alison Ferullo (North Andover, Mass.) and
Jess Sullivan (Wrentham, Mass.) netted two goals each for the Hawks while four other Hawks netted one goal in the contest. Sophomore
Maggie Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.) netted her first collegiate goal in the third quarter. Senior
Annie Richards (Reading, Mass.) and Sullivan were tied for the Saint Anselm lead with two assists each. Sullivan posted a team-high four points on the two goals and two assists.
Senior
Grace Young (Merrimack, N.H.) made 14 saves for the Hawks including six saves in the second quarter alone. Young falls to 6-2 on the season.
Izzy Grant opened the scoring in the contest, finding the back of the cage just 1:02 into the opening quarter. That gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Christina McCabe doubled the lead before junior
Meghan Cotraro (Beverly, Mass.) got the Hawks on the board at 9:10 of the first quarter.
McCabe and Sullivan traded goals 39 seconds apart before back-to-back goals from Grant pushed the Panthers lead to 5-2. With 1:42 to go, Sullivan netted her second goal of the contest which closed the opening quarter with Adelphi leading, 5-3.
Adelphi would score four consecutive goals in a stretch of 3:48 to push the Panthers lead to 9-3 but a last minute goal by junior
Ellie Richards (Reading, Mass.) snapped the streak and made the halftime score 9-4 in favor of the visitors.
Saint Anselm held a 4-1 scoring edge in the third quarter and netted the first three goals of the quarter as Ferullo and junior
Lexi Palmisano (Woburn, Mass.) got the Hawks back to a two-goal deficit at 9-7. Grant and Fitzgerald traded goals in the final two minutes which pushed the score to 10-8 through 45 minutes of play.
Adelphi scored in the opening minute of the fourth quarter before
Kristina Kallansrude iced the contest with 3:07 left in the contest, giving Adelphi a 12-8 win.
