Men's lacrosse snaps skid with comeback win over Bentley

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Nick Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal with eight seconds remaining to cap a five-goal comeback for the nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team over No. 16 Bentley University, 14-13.

With the win, the Hawks snapped a three-game skid and improve to 4-3 on the season and 2-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Falcons fall to 5-2 overall and 4-1 conference play. Saint Anselm returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 6 when Franklin Pierce University comes to the Hilltop for a 7 p.m. opening faceoff.

Senior CJ Hart (Reading, Mass.) stopped a career-high 22 shots on goal, aiding the Hawks to the comeback win. Hart improves to 4-3 on the season and grabs his 20th career victory for Saint Anselm.

The Hawks offense was led by senior Sean Tomaszewski (Arlington, Mass.) and junior Jack Robinson (Wilbraham, Mass.) who netted three goals each while junior Jack Andrews (Cumberland, R.I.), senior Jack Wells (Melrose, Mass.), and Larsen scored a pair of goals each. Tomaszewski and Andrews led the Hawks with four points each.

The last time Saint Anselm posted a comeback win of four goals or more came on Apr. 15, 2017. The Hawks posted a 10-9 overtime win over Assumption University after trailing by four in the third quarter of that contest.

Bentley would take an 11-6 lead with a man-up goal at 14:51 of the third quarter, marking the largest lead for the Falcons. Saint Anselm rallied to score five consecutive goals using just three minutes and nine seconds of the quarter, capped by the first collegiate goal for senior Kyle Fisher (Nashua, N.H.). Fisher's goal came at 9:21 of the third quarter and was the final goal until Ben Baldasro netted a man-up goal for Bentley to take a 12-11 lead at 11:05 of the fourth.

The Hawks would net back-to-back goals to take their first lead of the game since the opening minutes of the contest. A goal at 2:16 for Luke Jaber tied the score at 13, setting up the game's final goal.

Earlier in the contest, Tomaszewski opened the scoring at 13:48 of the first quarter before three consecutive goals by Bentley gave the visitors a 3-1 edge at 9:39 of the opening frame. A pair of goals from Robinson sandwiched a tally by Clay Moseman which pushed the score to 4-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Bentley would go on to strike six times in the second quarter as Ryan Birch and Nathan Alviti opened the period with goals for the Falcons before Robinson and Andrews found a pair of their own. However, Bentley scored four of the final five goals in the second quarter, giving them a 10-6 lead at the half.

The Falcons held a 56-42 advantage in shots on goal in the contest. The Hawks committed just seven turnovers compared to 15 from the Falcons. Saint Anselm was one-for-one in its extra-man opportunities while Bentley was two-for-four.
