PREVIEW: No. 9 men's lacrosse hosts Georgian Court in home opener

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team opens its 2022 home schedule on Saturday, Mar. 5 when they host Georgian Court from Grappone Stadium at 11 a.m.

The Hawks jumped out to an 11-0 first half lead and eventually posted a 14-5 final score in the season-opening win over Chestnut Hill College on Feb. 27. Saint Anselm grabbed its third-consecutive season-opening win and has logged a first half shutout for the fourth time in the team's last 13 games. After hosting the Lions, Saint Anselm opens its Northeast-10 Conference slate at Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday, Mar. 12.

The Lions suffered their fourth loss of the season on Mar. 2 at nationally-ranked Adelphi University by a 16-6 score. The team has fallen to three nationally-ranked foes in its first four games, coming to the Hilltop with an 0-4 mark. After coming to Manchester, N.H., Georgian Court returns home to host Molly College in just their second home game of the season.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • In the win over Chestnut Hill, the Hawks were led by junior Jack Andrews (Cumberland, R.I.) who matched a career-high of six points on four goals and two assists. Classmate Jack Robinson (Wilbraham, Mass.) posted a personal-best with two goals and three assists for five points.
  • Sophomore Nick Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) added two goals and assisted on one other for three points, part of nine student-athletes who registered at least one goal.
  • Junior Craig Yannone (Lynnfield, Mass.) led Saint Anselm at the X, winning 13-of-18 faceoffs and collected a team-high 11 ground balls. Yannone also netted one goal for the Hawks offense.
  • Junior Ryan Slattery (North Andover, Mass.) paced the Saint Anselm defense with three caused turnovers, part of a group who caused 22 turnovers in the contest. The Griffins posted 33 turnovers in the contest. Slattery was named the NE10 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
  • Senior CJ Hart (Reading, Mass.), who is a Preseason All-America First Team selection from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and Inside Lacrosse, made eight saves in the cage for the Hawks, allowing two goals in just over three quarters of action. Junior David Olsen (Salem, N.H.) came on in relief of Hart for the fourth quarter, making two saves on five shots on target.
  • Saint Anselm was scoreless in its two extra man opportunities against the Griffins. During the 2021 season, the Hawks netted 30 goals in 77 man-up chances, good for a 39.0% conversion rate.
  • The Hawks defense allowed three goals in five man-down scenarios, killing off penalties at 40%. The 2021 squad allowed 17 goals in 56 times shorthanded, operating at 69.6%.
SCOUTING GEORGIAN COURT
  • The Lions kept the game against Adelphi in reach through first quarter as Daniel Burnham, Michael Ventresca, and Devin Bell netted four goals in the opening 15 minutes of play, ending the frame trailing 6-4. However, four second quarter goals and the first three goals of the third quarter pushed the Panthers to a 13-4 edge which would eventually end as a 16-6 win for Adelphi.
  • Tallen Smith leads the Lions with six goals and one assist for seven points. Ventresca and Bell rank second and third on the squad with four and three goals each.
  • Burnham has a team-high three helpers while Ventresca is second with two. As a team, the Lions have scored 19 goals with 12 of them coming unassisted. Smith and Thomas Heegan are the other two student-athletes with one assist each.
  • Sebastian Farah has drawn three starts in the cage for the Lions. He has stopped 37 shots on goal, good for a .425 save percentage and a 17.41 goals-against average. Andrew Candino has drawn the other start and has appeared in three games. Candino has a 22.78 goals-against average and a .310 save percentage.
  • The Lions has netted two goals in 13 man-up opportunities, scoring at 15.4% while they have allowed four goals in six man-down scenarios, killing off penalties at 33.3%.
ALL-TIME vs. GEORGIAN COURT
  • This marks the second meeting all-time between the Hawks and Lions.
  • Saint Anselm posted a 15-6 win over Georgian Court on Mar. 11, 2020, marking the final game for the Hawks that spring.
  • Graduate student Sean Tomaszewski (Arlington, Mass.), Palmer, Robinson, and junior Will Kezerian (Melrose, Mass.) were part of the 15-goal performance for the Hawks. Hart stopped 10 of 15 shots on goal in the contest while junior Will Davis (Franklin, Mass.) made his collegiate debut in the fourth quarter. Slattery caused two turnovers and collected two ground balls while Yannone was 20-23 from the faceoff X and gathered 14 ground balls.
