DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The No. 21 Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team dropped the final game of its spring break trip to No. 16 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Friday by a 14-10 score.
Saint Anselm suffers its first loss of the season, falling to 3-1 while the Eagles improve to 9-0. The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 22 when Saint Michael's College comes to the Hilltop for a 4 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference tilt.
Junior
Lexi Palmisano (Woburn, Mass.) netted five goals to lead the Saint Anselm offense. Palmisano has scored at least five goals in each of the last three games. Senior
Jenna Balboni (Billerica, Mass.) scored two goals in the contest while sophomore
Jess Sullivan (Wrentham, Mass.), senior
Sheila Gadbois (Southborough, Mass.), and freshman
Samantha Rivet (Sudbury, Mass.) each recorded one goal for the Hawks. Rivet's third quarter goal marked the first of her collegiate career.
Senior
Grace Young (Merrimack, N.H.) made a season-high 13 saves in the cage for the Hawks. Young has made 10 or more saves in each of the last three games. The senior goalkeeper now sits at 205 saves in her collegiate career which gives her the sixth-most in program history.
The Hawks and Eagles traded goals through the first quarter as
Sallie Squire got the hosts on the board first at 9:59 of the first quarter. Palmisano tied the contest at one at 7:19 of the quarter. In the final 2:45 of the opening frame,
Murphy McDonough would tally two goals for Embry-Riddle but Palmisano would split the McDonough tallies which pushed the score to 3-2 through the first.
Embry-Riddle scored the opening two goals of the second quarter before Sullivan snapped the three-goal streak at 11:13. The Eagles tacked on two more goals including one from Squire with 1:43 left in the half to give Embry-Riddle a 7-3 advantage at the break.
A four-goal run for the Hawks that spanned 7:40 of the third quarter, knotted the score at seven. Gadbois, Palmisano, and Rivet all found the back of the net for Saint Anselm on the four-goal stretch.
The Eagles snapped the Hawks scoring streak as
Elizabeth Ninesling converted on a free position chance with 1:04 left in the third quarter and a goal by
Tori Lammes with two seconds remaining gave Embry-Riddle a 9-7 lead through 45 minutes of play.
Embry-Riddle opened the fourth quarter scoring at 12:42 with its third consecutive goal, this one coming from McDonough. Ninesling would strike again just 28 seconds later to reestablish a four-goal edge for the hosts.
After the Eagles jumped out to a six-goal lead from a six-goal run, Palmisano netted her fifth goal of the game to make the score 13-8 with nine minutes left to play.
A pair of goals late in the contest by Balboni pushed the score to 14-10, which would mark the final score in the contest between nationally-ranked opponents.
The Eagles held a 27-16 advantage in shots on goal. Saint Anselm converted on 18-of-24 clears and won 15 draw controls. The Hawks collected 21 ground balls in the game.
