PREVIEW: Women's tennis takes on Wayne State, Atlantis in Florida

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team returns to play this weekend, taking on Wayne State University on the campus of Nova Southeastern University.

Saint Anselm played to a 4-10 record this past fall, racking up two wins in eight Northeast-10 Conference games. The Hawks will take on three opponents this spring, including Wayne State, Atlantis (exhibition) on the team's spring break trip and Colby-Sawyer shortly into the month of April.

Wayne State owns a 4-3 overall record, falling last time out against Milwaukee by a 4-3 margin. The Warriors compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference under long-time Head Coach Sheila Snyder, who ranks 11th in NCAA Division II history with 399 coaching victories.

The match against Atlantis will be an exhibition contest scheduled for Sunday, Mar. 13 at 10:30 a.m. The contest will be played in Pembroke Pines, Fla.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Freshman Olivia Parzick (Bow, N.H.) won a team-leading five matches in singles play this fall, going 4-2 at the No. 4 singles flight. Freshman Julia Svor (Lewiston, Maine) and classmate Julia Casaletto (Rowley, Mass.) racked up four wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively, for the Hawks.
  • Prior to the final regular-season match at Adelphi, the Hawks had won at least one doubles match in six consecutive contests. In total, Saint Anselm was 7-6 at the No. 3 doubles flight.
  • Saint Anselm is competing in its first non-conference match against an NCAA Division II opponent since Mar. 17, 2019 against Roberts Wesleyan. The Hawks, however, regularly play NCAA Division I Holy Cross on its schedule.
  • The Hawks are also making their first Florida trip since the 2018-19 season when they went 1-3 against Findlay, Muhlenberg, Cornerstone and Cedarville.

SCOUTING WAYNE STATE

  • The Warriors are led by Anais Ruyssen and her 5-2 record at No. 1 singles. The tandem of Laura Cazacu and Linda Liong has not logged a single defeat for Wayne State in doubles play, competing primarily at No. 2 doubles.
  • Wayne State, winners of 10 GLIAC titles and owners of a 494-242-1 (.671) overall record entering this season, is a combined 25-3 (.893) in doubles play this academic year.
  • Snyder, in her 33rd year as the Head Coach at Wayne State, is a three-time GLIAC Coach of the Year who helped the Warriors to the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Championship in 2014.
  • The Warriors have not played since the aforementioned match against Milwaukee that took place on Feb. 19.

ALL-TIME vs. WAYNE STATE

  • The two programs have not met since Saint Anselm launched its women's tennis program in 1976.
