Women's basketball denied by Southern Conn. St. on the road

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball was defeated by Southern Connecticut State University on Sunday by a 105-69 margin at the James Moore Field House.

Saint Anselm falls to .500 overall with a 10-10 overall record alongside a mark of 6-7 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Southern Connecticut State, winners of just one of its last nine games, improves to 8-10 overall on the year and to 5-7 versus the league.

Senior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored 17 points in the loss. Junior McKenzy Ouellette (West Newfield, Maine) handed out a career-high six assists, matching the output of classmate Macy Spinks (Luton, England). Freshman Katie Lemanski (Haymarket, Va.) equaled a career-high mark with nine points as four student-athletes tied for the team lead in rebounds with four.

The Owls finished the game by shooting 65.6% from the floor and a robust 58.1% from three-point land, making 18 three-point field goals on 31 attempts. Handing out a program record 34 assists on the day, Southern Connecticut State was shooting well over 70% from the floor near the midway point of the third quarter.

Southern Connecticut State made eight of its first nine baskets, dominating the opening quarter with an 18-4 scoring run to begin the game. The Hawks countered with an 8-0 spurt of their own to reduce the deficit to six, but it was all SCSU from there as the hosts made 10 of their next 14 shots from the floor to capture a 53-30 lead at halftime.

Saint Anselm improved its offensive performance in the second half of play, but the Owls continued to punish the Hawks from distance and scored 27 and 25 points, respectively, in the third and fourth quarters.

Jessica Fressle scored a game-high 33 points (with 11 rebounds) for the Owls before leaving the court in the fourth quarter. Delaney Connors handed out 11 assists in the winning effort.

Saint Anselm heads to Southern New Hampshire this Tuesday, Feb. 8 for a 5:30 p.m. showdown with the Penmen, who are receiving votes in the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association National Poll.
