Saint Anselm posted a win over the Southwest Division fifth-seed, American International, on Feb. 26 in the NE10 First Round by a 61-53 score. The Hawks improved to 15-12 on the season with the First Round win.
The Dolphins posted a 16-6 overall record and a 14-5 mark in NE10 play, which gave them the top-seed in the Southwest Division. They earned a bye through the First Round and a home game in the Quarterfinals.
The winner of this quarterfinal will square off against the winner of the Northeast Division second-seed Bentley University and the Northeast's sixth-seed in Franklin Pierce University. The highest remaining seed will host the semifinal on Thursday, Mar. 3. The conference title game is scheduled for Sunday, Mar. 6 at the highest remaining seed.
All tickets for Winter NE10 postseason events will cost $5.00. Students attending NE10 member institutions will be permitted to attend the games for free after presenting a valid identification card.
SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
- With the win over American International, the Hawks have won at least one NE10 postseason game in three consecutive seasons.
- Senior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) canned a game-high 20 points which brings her career total to 1,769, the most by a student-athlete in a Saint Anselm uniform.
- Needing just one point in the NE10 Quarterfinals game on Monday, Steinman would pass Shannon Ryan '20, who scored 1,769 points in three seasons on the Hilltop and two points at Boston College before transferring to Saint Anselm, for the outright lead among any student-athlete in team history.
- Steinman grabbed a game-high 11 boards to post her fourth consecutive double-double. The senior was also a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line, setting a program record for most free throws made in a single season at 153.
- Steinman leads the NE10 with a scoring average of 20.9 points per game. Her 8.1 rebounds per game are sixth most in the conference. The senior leads the NE10 in three-pointers (60), free throw makes and attempts (153-172), and in total points (565). Steinman ranks second in field goals (176-406) and in free throw percentage (89.0) while ranking inside the top-10 in three-point percentage (37.3).
- Nationally, Steinman ranks fourth in free throw makes, fifth in points per game, and ninth in free throw attempts.
- Sophomore Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Hawks with junior Macy Spinks (Luton, England) producing seven points and a team-high four assists.
- Turco, who is a seven-time winner of the NE10's Rookie of the Week honors this season, is averaging 15.8 points per game which is sixth-most in the conference and leads all rookie-eligible student-athletes. Turco is hauling in 4.6 rebounds per game to rank second on the Hawks.
- Spinks ranks 17th in the conference with 2.4 assists per game. She has dished out 61 assists on the season, which ties her with Turco for second-most on the Hawks.
- Freshman Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, Conn.) is averaging 1.1 rejections per contest this season, which is 10th best in the NE10. She has recorded two blocks in three of the last five contests including two against the Yellow Jackets. Hoyt is also adding 6.4 points per game to the Hawks offense.
SCOUTING LE MOYNE
- The Dolphins bring a 16-6 overall record and a 14-5 mark in regular season conference play into the Quarterfinals matchup.
- The team opened the season with a 4-2 mark before rattling off six consecutive wins to push themselves to a 10-2 mark. After falling to Franklin Pierce to snap the streak on Jan. 27, the Dolphins have gone 6-4 down the stretch, heading into the NE10 playoffs.
- Le Moyne fell to eventual conference champion, Stonehill College, in the 2019-20 semifinals. The Dolphins were scheduled to play the Hawks in the NCAA First Round on Mar. 13, 2020 but the tournament was canceled.
- Emma Brinker leads the Dolphins offense with 13.7 points per game while Erin Fouracre follows closely with 13.0 points per contest.
- Brinker ranks 10th in the conference in points per game while Fouracre's scoring average in 17th best in the NE10.
- Brinker also leads the team with 8.9 rebounds per game, followed closely by Jenna Zimmerman who is pulling down 8.0 rebounds per contest. Brinker is fourth in the NE10 in boards per game.
- Fouracre has the second-most assists per game in the conference with 4.6. She has dished 96 helpers in 21 games this season.
- Saeeda Abdul-Aziz and Lytoya Baker are adding double digit per game scoring efforts for Le Moyne with 11.6 and 10.0 points per game.
- Le Moyne leads the NE10 in free throw makes (13.8) and attempts per game (19.7) and leads in rebounds per game (44.5). The Dolphins commit the fewest fouls per game at 11.6 while ranking second in points per game allowed at 57.7.
LAST TIME OUT vs. LE MOYNE
- The Dolphins captured a 67-63 win over the Hawks on Jan. 22 from Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
- Fouracre led all players with 19 points while Steinman and Turco tied for a Hawks' high with 17 points.
- The Hawks trailed by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter following a pair of free throws by Fouracre with 2:29 left in regulation but a 7-0 run that spanned 1:43. Turco drained a trey with 13 seconds left to play, cutting the deficit to two but a pair of free throws by Fouracre gave the Dolphins their four-point edge.
ALL-TIME – NE10 POSTSEASON
- The Hawks and Dolphins have met twice in the NE10 postseason with Le Moyne holding a 2-0 record over the Hawks. The last time the programs met in the NE10 postseason was on Feb. 25, 2018 resulting in a 77-49 win for the Dolphins in the Quarterfinals from Syracuse, N.Y.
- Saint Anselm won its first and only NE10 tournament title in 1990-91, defeating nationally-ranked Bentley by an 81-76 margin. The Hawks have finished as the tournament's runner-up on six occasions, most recently in 2019-20.
- The Hawks are 30-30 (.500) in the NE10 postseason all-time following the win over the Yellow Jackets and, in 2019-20, won two consecutive postseason games for the first time since the 1998-99 playoffs.
- Le Moyne owns a 14-16 (.467) record in NE10 postseason play all-time and, like the Hawks, owns one NE10 postseason title (2018-19). The team has also finished as the runner-up once, falling to American International in the 2001-02 title game.
ALL-TIME vs. LE MOYNE
- Saint Anselm is 21-20 against Le Moyne in the all-time series dating back to Jan. 18, 1997.
- Previous to this season's contest on Jan. 22, the Hawks had won each of the last two games against the Dolphins, including the 2019 NCAA Division II East Region Championship played at USciences on Mar. 18, 2019.
- Outside of the regular season, the Hawks and Dolphins have met three times with the Dolphins holding a 2-1 mark over the Hawks. The team were slated to play in the 2019-20 NCAA postseason but that contest was canceled.
