PREVIEW: Women's ice hockey concludes regular season against Saint Michael's

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team concludes its regular season with a pair of weekend home games against Saint Michael's College on Friday, Feb. 25 and Saturday, Feb. 26.

The Hawks posted a weekend sweep over Sacred Heart University on Feb. 18 and Feb. 19 by 3-0 and 3-2 scores. With the wins, Saint Anselm improved to 12-12-3 on the season with a 9-6-3 record in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play. After concluding the regular season on Saturday, the Hawks will host a NEWHA playoffs First Round game on Mar. 1. The final seedings are still up in the air as Saint Anselm is the current third seed and holds a one-point edge over Sacred Heart, who is in fourth.

The Purple Knights concluded a stretch of four games in five days, splitting two games against Post University before falling in both contests to Long Island University. Saint Michael's is now 3-20-1 on the season with a 1-16-1 record against the NEWHA. The Purple Knights are the current sixth seed in the NEWHA standings and could move up to as high as fifth.

Prior to the start of Saturday's 3 p.m. opening puck drop, Saint Anselm will honor its five senior student-athletes in Sarah Cahill (Salt Lake City, Utah), Kendra Currier (Middleton, Mass.), Blue Fancy (Orleans, Mass.), Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.), and Erin Meyers (St. Paul, Minn.) in a pregame Senior Day celebration.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • Freshman Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) netted two goals and assisted on one in the Hawks 3-2 win on Feb. 18. Turner's second goal came in a five-on-three shorthanded scenario and was featured on ESPN's SportsCenter as part of the "Top 10" plays of the day.
  • The freshman was named the NEWHA Rookie of the Week for her efforts against the Pioneers, marking the fourth time she has collected the accolade this season. Turner ranks second amongst freshman in the NEWHA in scoring. She has netted 23 points on 12 goals and 11 assists. Her point total is fourth most in the conference while her goal total is third in the NEWHA.
  • Across the weekend, Meyers scored the game-winning goal in Saturday's overtime 3-2 win and assisted on two goals in Friday's tilt. Meyers is tied for fourth in the NEWHA with 14 assists while tied for sixth with 22 points.
  • Golini, who is tied with Meyers for sixth in the conference in points, scored once and assisted on one goal in the weekend series. She has scored nine goals and assisted on 13 others which puts her in a tie for 10th in the conference in goals and sixth in assists.
  • Junior netminder Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) leads the conference with 891 saves while ranking second in save percentage at .936 and fifth in goals-against average at 2.51. On the National Collegiate level, Kelley has the eighth-highest save percentage and has the third-most saves. In her first season on the Hilltop, Kelley has set the Saint Anselm women's ice hockey program record for saves in a single season.
  • The Hawks have potted just nine goals in 114 power play chances this season, good for a 7.9% success rate. The team has been shorthanded 115 times and allowed 16 goals in those scenarios, good for an 86.1% penalty-kill rate.
SCOUTING SAINT MICHAEL'S
  • The Purple Knights netted a 5-1 win over Post on Feb. 18, marking their first conference win of the season. Since then, they have dropped their last three entering the final weekend of play.
  • Jenna Hoops, Angelina Ruiz, and Ella Saracco are tied for the team lead with five goals each. The trio is also tied for the team lead with eight points each, adding three helpers to their five goals.
  • Mikaela Langbacka leads the team with eight helpers, which puts her in a tie for the team lead with eight points. Jenna Harrison has posted five assists and two goals for seven points.
  • Leah White has started 14 games in goal for the Purple Knights. She has a 4.31 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage. Carissa Mudrak has drawn eight starts and has a .885 save percentage and a 5.16 goals-against average.
  • Saint Michael's is seven for 93 on the power play, good for a 7.5% success rate while the penalty kill operates at 79.1%, allowing 18 goals in 86 times shorthanded.
ALL-TIME vs. SAINT MICHAEL'S
  • The weekend series marks the 47th and 48th meetings in the all-time series between the Hawks and Purple Knights. Saint Anselm is 44-0-2 against Saint Michael's.
  • Earlier this season, the Hawks netted a 6-1 win on Jan. 21 before the teams skated to a 1-1 tie on Jan. 22.
  • Turner netted her first collegiate hat trick in the win while junior Margaret Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.) and sophomore Abigail Blair (Grand Island, N.Y.) each netted their first collegiate goals. In the tie, White turned aside 66 shots on goal for the Purple Knights, which is a single game high in the National Collegiate level.
  • Saint Anselm won the first 43 meetings in the all-time series, dating back to Dec. 3, 2004. Since skating to a scoreless draw on Jan. 14, 2020, the Hawks are 1-0-1 against the Purple Knights.
