WALTHAM, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season of play with a 73-62 loss at Bentley University on Tuesday.
The Hawks (14-12) end the regular season with a 10-9 record in the Northeast-10 Conference, earning the No. 4 seed in the Northeast Division. Saint Anselm opens the NE10 postseason at home with a First Round game with the No. 5 seed in the Southwest Division, American International, on Friday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m.
More information about the opening game of the NE10 playoffs will be revealed in the coming days.
Senior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) had another outstanding game for Saint Anselm, scoring 32 of her team's 62 points while adding 12 rebounds for the Hawks. She exited the game with 1,749 career points, placing her within striking distance of the all-time program record of 1,767 points established by Shannon Ryan '20.
Freshman Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) poured home 10 points and hauled in five rebounds in the loss. Sophomore Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) had nine points and senior Stephanie Jankovic (Averill Park, N.Y.) handed out a team-leading three assists for the Hawks.
Bentley shot over 55% from the floor, securing the victory by limiting Saint Anselm to just 41.1% from the field. The Hawks owned the rebounding edge (32-to-27), including the offensive glass to the tune of 13-to-6, but the Falcons pulled away in the second quarter with a 19-0 scoring run heading into halftime.
With the score tied at 13 near the end of the first quarter, the Hawks used a 13-4 scoring run to establish a game-high lead of 26-17 with 8:55 to go in the first half. However, it was literally all Falcons heading into the locker room as 19 consecutive points were scored by the hosts – Saint Anselm was 0-for-10 from the floor with five turnovers in this stretch.
The Hawks trimmed the Bentley lead to five points on several occasions in the third quarter, yet the resilient Falcons responded with an 11-2 spurt that spanned the third and fourth stanzas. Once again, Saint Anselm did not give in to end the game, once again reducing the Bentley lead to five points with 3:21 left in the game.
Saint Anselm finished with just one field goal on its last six shots and sent Bentley to the line four times, making all four of its attempts from the charity stripe in the waning minutes to put the game out of reach.
Autumn Ceppi, the Bucknell transfer, paced Bentley with 26 points and 11 rebounds.
