HOOKSETT, N.H. – Freshman
Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn) netted both goals for the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team who downed Southern New Hampshire by a 2-1 score in overtime on Friday night.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 13-10-2 on the season with a 10-5-2 mark in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Penmen fall to 15-7-0 overall and 13-4-0 against the league.
The teams are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 19 from Sullivan Arena in both squads' regular season finale. Saint Anselm will celebrate its senior class in a pregame ceremony, prior to the 4 p.m. scheduled puck drop.
Saint Anselm controlled most of the play in five-minute overtime, putting four shots on goal compared to one for Southern New Hampshire. The last shot came from Reynolds, who fired a wrist shot from the top of the slot, beating
JT Kossakowski on the lower right side of the goal. Reynolds collected loose puck left by freshman
Mark Blaney (Braintree, Mass.) near the bottom of the left circle. Reynolds would skate toward the blue line and cut into the slot nearly uncontested to bury the overtime game-winner. That is the first multi-goal game for Reynolds and his first collegiate game winner.
Earlier in the contest,
George Thurston scored the opening goal of the contest at the 17:12 mark of the first period. Thurston one-timed a pass from
Jake Cox from the top of the slot into the upper right corner of the goal, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
After allowing 18 shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes of play, the Hawks allowed just nine in the second period. However, the team put 25 shots on goal in the period but could not beat Kossakowski through 40 minutes of play.
While on its seventh power play of the contest, junior
Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) collected a pass at the point from senior
Anthony Iacullo (Barrington, Ill.). Murphy fired a wrist shot that was deflected by Reynolds in front of the goal to tie the tilt at 15:38 of the final regulation period.
On the power play, the Hawks scored once with the man-advantage while the Penmen, who entered the contest converting on the power play at nearly 34%, were held scoreless in five opportunities. Saint Anselm also held a 40-30 edge in faceoffs with juniors
Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) and
Chris Lemay (Salem, N.H.) leading the way with 14 and 11 wins each.
Junior goaltender
Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) stopped 39 of 40 shots on goal in the win, improving to 13-9-2 on the season. Kossakowski faced 47 shots on target, stopping 45 for Southern New Hampshire.
