PREVIEW: Men's basketball concludes calendar year at Saint Michael's

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team concludes the 2022 calendar year on Saturday, Dec. 31 with a trip to Saint Michael's College for a 3:30 p.m. showdown with the Purple Knights.

Saint Anselm has won six games in a row and owns an 8-3 overall record. The Hawks are also 5-1 against the Northeast-10 Conference, thanks to four consecutive victories in league play from Sunday, Nov. 27 through Thursday, Dec. 8.

Offensively, the Hawks matched a season-high total with 97 points last time out against Bridgeport. In total this season, the Hawks have scored at least 84 points on five occasions – last season, the Hawks had just three of those games.

Saint Michael's owns an 8-5 overall record and has jumped out to a 2-3 record in limited NE10 action. After a four-game losing streak to begin the month of December, the Purple Knights have picked up road victories against Mercy (N.Y.) on Saturday, Dec. 17 and at Queens (N.Y.) the following Monday.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Across its six-game winning streak, the Hawks have all five starters averaging at least 10.8 points per game. Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) are leading the way with 16.8 and 16.0 points per game, respectively, in that span.
  • In the last six games, junior Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.) is averaging nearly a double-double with 10.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game in that time frame.
  • Collectively during the winning streak, the Hawks are also enjoying a +10.3 rebounding margin, a +10.7 scoring margin and are shooting 53.1% from the floor (189-for-356) and 42.4% from distance (56-for-132).
  • The Hawks commit just 13.5 fouls per game, ranking 16th in NCAA Division II, and the team's 17.9 free throw attempts per game ranks second in the league. The Hawks trail only Bentley (85.7) for the NE10 lead in scoring offense (77.0).
  • Saint Anselm is 329-28 (.922) all-time when scoring 90 or more points in a game – the Hawks are a perfect 3-0 this season when doing so.
  • Head Coach Keith Dickson has compiled a 689-356 (.659) record at Saint Anselm in 36 seasons since his promotion to Head Coach in 1986. Among active NCAA Division II coaches, Dickson ranks fifth in victories (689).

SCOUTING SAINT MICHAEL'S

  • Saint Michael's has already matched last season's win total (eight) in just 13 games so far this season. Under Head Coach Eric Eaton, the Purple Knights have not won double-digit games since the 2014-15 season (18-11) that culminated in an NE10 Semifinals appearance loss at Saint Anselm.
  • The Purple Knights have four student-athletes averaging double-digit point totals, led by CJ Crews and his 11.8 points per game. Junior Joël Kabimba is posting 11.7 points per tilt and Jacob Duniver is hauling in 7.1 rebounds per tilt, leading the squad.
  • Saint Michael's came out on top against Queens (N.Y.) last time out, missing just two of the team's 23 free throws in the second half to come away with a 64-53 victory. The Purple Knights were led by junior Kasai Brown and his 11-for-11 performance from the charity stripe.
  • The Purple Knights lead the NE10 as a team with 19.2 free throw attempts per game and 15.2 free throws made per game. Freshman Alan Brzezinski is the team leader with an 88.4% free throw percentage, making 38-of-43 so far this season.

ALL-TIME vs. SAINT MICHAEL'S

  • Saint Anselm is 71-54 (.568) in the all-time series against Saint Michael's that dates back to Dec. 14, 1939.
  • The Hawks have won 22 of the last 25 meetings and have dropped only two of those three losses in regulation.
  • At home against Saint Michael's, the Hawks have won 18 of the last 19 games.
  • Under Dickson, Saint Anselm has a 49-21 (.700) record against the Purple Knights.
