MANCHESTER, N.H. – With first place in the Northeast-10 Conference on the line, the ninth-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team came away with a thrilling 2-1 shootout victory over No. 6-ranked Assumption University on Monday.
With both programs atop the NE10 regular season standings with two regular season games left to play, Saint Anselm (11-5, 10-2 NE10) now owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with Assumption (13-4, 10-2 NE10) and is the top team in the league with Monday's result.
With her team trailing 1-0 early in the shootout, Hawks netminder Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine) made a huge save on the second Assumption shooter. Junior Maddie Davis (Exeter, N.H.) stepped up with her team's next attempt, wrapping one around the Assumption keeper to draw the affair even.
After a wide Assumption shot, a stroke was called for Saint Anselm after a goalkeeping infraction – sophomore Grace Michael (Hampton Falls, N.H.) was substituted in for the home team and she rifled one past the Hounds backstop, putting her team ahead, 2-1.
The Greyhounds struck once again, tying the shootout at two before senior Avery Tucker (Westbrook, Maine) scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal. Assumption had a chance to extend the shootout, but the Greyhounds shooter carried the ball over the goal line to end it.
In regulation time, Assumption took a 1-0 lead just before the end of the third quarter. Christina Leonard put a shot on net that snuck under the charging McConnell, coming deep out of her net to cut off the attempt.
The Hawks were able to strike back with under six minutes left in regulation time as Davis tapped home a ball out of the air off a feed from Amanda Lewandowski (Franklin, Mass.), dramatically tying the game and sending the affair into two overtime periods.
Assumption fired four of the six shots in overtime, forcing McConnell to make two saves. Kylie Gargiulo, the goalkeeper for the Hounds, also made two saves on two would-be Hawks goal scorers. The 2021 NFHCA Division II East Region Player of the Year made seven saves on eight shots through the 80 minutes leading up to the shootout.
McConnell finished with four saves on five shots.
