BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team netted two third period goals on its way to a 3-1 win over Stonehill College in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play.
With the win, the Hawks extend their unbeaten streak to five and move to 6-7-1 on the season with a 6-2-1 mark in NEWHA tilts. The Skyhawks drop to 5-6-1 overall and 5-3-0 in league contests. Saint Anselm will head to in-state foe, Franklin Pierce, on Friday, Nov. 11 in the first leg of a home-and-home series with the Ravens.
Junior
Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.), senior
Margaret Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.), and sophomore
Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) netted one goal each for Saint Anselm in the battle with the Skyhawks.
After forcing a turnover in the Skyhawks defensive end, senior
Gabrielle Huson (Edina, Minn.) put a shot on Skyhawks goaltender
Lauryn Hanafin which was saved. However, Tulchinsky collected the rebound and beat the sprawling goaltender for her eighth goal of the season at 7:28 of the opening period, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The Skyhawks tied the contest at one just 1:04 into the second period as
Alexis Petford sent a pass through the Saint Anselm defense for
Paige Whaley who beat senior goaltender
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) on the breakaway.
The Hawks had a pair of great scoring chances in the closing half of the second period. The first came on a breakaway chance for sophomore
Gracee Donovan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) but her shot was turned aside by Hanafin before Huson intercepted a pass in the Hawks defensive end and drove the length of the ice in a two-on-one. The senior fired a shot that Hanafin also stopped as the squads headed to the third period tie at one.
Saint Anselm grabbed a 2-1 lead at 3:47 of the third period on a tally by Sullivan. Sullivan buried a cross crease pass from junior
Claire Weber (Marshfield, Mass.), who created the two-on-one by forcing a turnover in the neutral zone.
Turner gave the Hawks a two-goal edge as she collected a loose puck in the Hawks attacking end and managed to beat the Stonehill net minder with a forehand shot at 11:02 of the third period.
With just under five minutes left to play in the third period, a five-minute major was issued to the Skyhawks which put the Hawks on the power play for the remainder of the contest. Saint Anselm would control play with the extra skater and take the 3-1 win on the road.
Stonehill held a 31-29 edge in shots on goal in the game. Neither side converted on their chances with the extra skater. Saint Anselm had four chances on the power play compared to five for the Skyhawks.
Kelley made 30 saves in the goal for Saint Anselm compared to 26 for Hanafin.
