MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior defender Savannah Popick (South Windsor, Conn.) scored the first goal of her career in overtime for the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team, propelling the Hawks to a 4-3 victory over the Skyhawks from Stonehill College on Friday.
Saint Anselm improves to 5-7-1 overall on the season and to 5-2-1 versus New England Women's Hockey Alliance opponents. Stonehill (5-5-1, 5-2-0 NEWHA), in its first season of NEWHA competition, lost a 3-2 lead in regulation before the overtime strike by Popick.
Receiving a pass back toward the blue line from classmate Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.), Popick flashed her skills by eluding a Stonehill defender and rifling the puck past the Skyhawks netminder for the game-winning strike. The goal was the first of her 40-game career on the Hilltop and she finished the day with her first three-point game of her career (1-2=3).
Sophomore Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) scored the first of her two goals just 4:26 in, redirecting a blast from the point by Popick to create a 1-0 lead. After back-to-back shorthanded markers by Stonehill's Brianna Walkom, Turner tied the game with a player-down goal of her own at 17:15 of the second stanza, wrapping the puck around the back of the Skyhawks net.
Less than a minute after Stonehill scored the go-ahead goal in the third period, senior Devin Porazinski (Parker, Colo.) found the scoresheet for the Hawks with under 10 minutes left in regulation time, dramatically tying the game. Popick threaded the needle cross-ice to Porazinski, who sniped the top-right corner of the goal to bring the affair even.
Hawks netminder Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) kept her team in the game, making 21 saves on 24 shots to secure the victory just two games after becoming the all-time saves leader at Saint Anselm. Hanna Zukow, the reigning NEWHA Goalkeeper of the Week, made 40 saves for Stonehill in defeat.
Saint Anselm returns the trip on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 5 p.m., heading to Stonehill to wrap up the home-and-home series with the Skyhawks.
