PREVIEW: Volleyball concludes regular season against New Haven, Southern Conn. St.

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team hosts the University of New Haven and Southern Connecticut State University on Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 5 to conclude the 2022 regular season.

Prior to the start of Saturday's match, the Hawks will honor the six seniors who make up the Saint Anselm volleyball Class of 2023.

The Hawks suffered a 3-0 loss to crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University on Oct. 26, marking the squad's most recent match. Saint Anselm enters the final weekend with an 18-8 overall record and a 7-3 mark in conference play.

The Chargers opened the month of November with a straight sets win over Assumption University on Nov. 1. New Haven is 15-10 overall and 6-4 in NE10 matches and will head to Saint Michael's College on Saturday, Nov. 5 to conclude its regular season.

The Owls dropped a non-conference match to Molly College on Oct. 29, dropping them to 15-13 overall. The team enters the final weekend of the regular season with a 4-6 record in conference matches.

HAWKS NOTES
  • The Hawks are ranked fifth in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region rankings and are one of six NE10 programs in the ranking.
  • Senior Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) leads the Hawks offense with 273 kills, good for an average of 3.21 kills per set. Casey is fifth in the conference in total kills and sixth in kills per set.
  • Junior Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) and sophomore Gabby Belcher (Buckeye, Ariz.) rank second and third on the squad with 198 kills and 187 kills each.
  • Senior Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) is averaging 8.90 assists per set with a total of 739 assists. She ranks fifth in total assists and fourth in assists per set in the conference.
  • Saint Anselm is 15th in all of Division II with 218 service aces which is also tied for the top spot in the conference. Henwood leads the squad with 36 service aces while Casey, Brown, and junior Alina Barbarena (Los Angeles, Calif.) have 35 service aces each.
  • Senior Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) holds the top spot on the Hawks roster with 346 digs, averaging 3.84 per set. Her total digs rank sixth in the NE10.
  • Junior Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) leads the Saint Anselm net presence with 18 solo blocks and 50 assisted for 68.0 total blocks.
SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
  • The Chargers are ninth in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region rankings.
  • Macy Brown leads the NE10 in total kills with 331 and owns the top kills per set ratio in the NE10 at 3.68. Avery Moore and Amihan Johnson are second and third on the squad with 176 and 164 kills each respectively.
  • Brown is second in the conference and is one of two student-athletes in the conference with 50 or more service aces this season. Brown has 50 service aces in 2022.
  • Brown also leads the squad with 353 digs and is averaging 3.92 per set on the season.
  • Sophia Leon-Tabor is averaging 8.84 assists per set and has a total of 796 helpers which ranks fifth and fourth compared to the NE10.
  • Kylie Reynolds-Martin is the top blocker for the Chargers with 14 solo blocks and 44 assisted for 58 total.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE
  • Gabriela Gaibur leads the Owls offense with 284 kills which translates to 3.19 kills per set.
  • Taylor Jones and Lily Miller have split time setting for Southern Connecticut State. Jones has thrown up 515 assists while Miller has 297 helpers.
  • Aubrey Villena ranks third in the NE10 with 45 service aces, averaging just under 0.50 service aces per set.
  • Villena also leads the Owls with 409 digs, good for a 4.17 digs per set ratio. Villena ranks second and fourth in the NE10 in those two statistical categories.
  • Payton Reis is fourth in the conference with 75.0 blocks to lead the Owls net defense. She has 21 solo blocks and 54 assisted.
ALL-TIME vs. NEW HAVEN, SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE
  • The Hawks and Chargers are meeting for the 22nd time in the all-time series. New Haven owns a 14-7 record in the series.
  • Saint Anselm posted a 3-2 win over New Haven on Oct. 29, 2021 marking the last meeting between the squads. The Hawks have won each of the last four matches and five of the last six.
  • Saint Anselm and Southern Connecticut State will be battling for the 27th occasion on Saturday. The Owls are 14-12 in the all-time series.
  • Southern Connecticut State posted a four-set victory on Oct. 30, 2021 in the last meeting between the teams.
