Saint Anselm (2-2, 1-0 NE10) is fresh off a strong performance against No. 9/14 Bentley on Saturday, Nov. 19. Senior Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) scored a career-high 35 points, becoming the 55th student-athlete in team history to reach 1,000 in his tenure on the Hilltop.
Pace (3-1, 0-1 NE10) won its first three games of the year before dropping a 63-59 result at Le Moyne on Saturday. The Setters opened up a 28-27 lead at the break, but Le Moyne responded with 36 of the game's final 67 points to rally back for the win.
Franklin Pierce (3-1, 1-0 NE10) has won three games in a row after posting a season-opening loss at home to Holy Family on Saturday, Nov. 12. Most recently, the Ravens clipped California (Pa.) in a rare Monday home game – Franklin Pierce held the edge in rebounding (44-to-34) and had 22 assists.
SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
- To reach 1,000 career points, Tention posted a career-high 35 points off 10 field goals while playing all 40 minutes in the win. Additionally, he was 12-for-12 from the free throw line in the win, his best performance across an 89-game career at Saint Anselm.
- Tention is 19-for-19 this season from the line and has made each of his last 31 attempts at the charity stripe dating back to last season. In 90 career games for Saint Anselm, Tention is averaging 11.2 points per game and exactly 20 points per tilt this season through four games.
- Senior Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) scored 18 points in his team's win against nationally-ranked Bentley and had six rebounds while junior Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.) matched sophomore Keith Robinson (Phillip Island, Australia) for the team lead with eight rebounds.
- Head Coach Keith Dickson, in his 37th year at Saint Anselm, has won 683 games in his career and owns a .658 winning percentage since taking the reins of the program in 1986-87. Among active NCAA Division II coaches, he ranks fifth in overall victories.
- Last season, Saint Anselm compiled a 17-11 overall record and qualified for NCAA Division II postseason once again, entering the 2021-22 East Region Championship as the No. 3 seed. After posting back-to-back wins to open the NE10 postseason, the Hawks fell in the NE10 Semifinals before falling in the Quarterfinals round of the NCAA Division II East Region Championship.
- With nine NE10 titles since the conference's inception in 1980-81, the Hawks have claimed more than double the amount of postseason championships than the second place institutions (4 – American Int'l, Assumption, Bentley, Stonehill).
SCOUTING PACE
- Through the early part of the season, Pace leads the NE10 in several statistical categories, including field goal percentage defense (35.9%), rebound margin (+8.5) and scoring defense (62.2). The Setters are second in blocks per game (5.0) and winning percentage (75.0%).
- Lyron Bennett is 12th in NCAA Division II with nine blocks and he also ranks eighth in the nation by playing 38:43 minutes per game, on average. He is averaging a team-best 14.3 points per game, shooting north of 55% on the season (21-for-38) from the floor.
- Brandon Powell has started each of his team's four games, posting exactly 14 points per game while pouring home a team-leading 10 three-point baskets. Bryan Powell is the other double-digit point scorer for the Setters (11.3 ppg).
- Last week, the Setters were 23rd in NCAA Division II, according to the Division II Sports Information Directors of America media poll. Pace was an NCAA tournament team last season, defeating the No. 4 seed from Dominican (N.Y.) in the East Region Quarterfinals before falling in overtime to Bentley in the semifinals.
SCOUTING FRANKLIN PIERCE
- The Ravens have won three games in a row, including a 78-74 victory over Assumption on Saturday, Nov. 19 to open NE10 play. Three of the team's first four games have been played at home and the Sunday tilt at Saint Anselm is just the second road contest for the Ravens.
- Junior Sean Bresnan is averaging just shy of 15 points per game, logging a 56.4% shooting percentage (22-for-39) for the Ravens. He is trailed by Mohamed Traore and his team-leading 13 three-point baskets, averaging 13.8 points per game.
- Bresnan also leads Franklin Pierce in rebounds per game (6.8), ranking eighth in the NE10 in that metric. Traore has handed out 4.0 assists per game, ranking fourth among NE10 student-athletes, and his 13 treys ranks second in the NE10 behind CJ Crews from Saint Michael's, who has 15.
- Traore was an All-Rookie Team selection by the NE10's coaches last season, averaging 13.8 points per game and over 775 minutes played.
ALL-TIME vs. PACE, FRANKLIN PIERCE
- Saint Anselm is 25-10 all-time against Pace and has won 13 of the team's last 14 games against the Setters. When playing on the road at Pace, the Hawks have lost just twice in regulation time across 16 games.
- The Hawks are 41-20 versus the Ravens since the first meeting on Dec. 29, 1984, a neutral-site loss to the Ravens by a 51-50 margin. Franklin Pierce has won two in a row over Saint Anselm, both by double-digit scoring margins.
- Prior to the recent losing skid to Franklin Pierce, the Hawks had won seven of their last eight over the Ravens since Feb. 1, 2017.
