Men's ice hockey skates to 1-1 tie at Saint Michael's

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie at Saint Michael's College on Friday evening.

With the tie, the Hawks move to 4-2-1 on the season with a 3-2-1 record in Northeast-10 Conference play while the Purple Knights go to 3-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference contests. The teams will conclude their two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 19 with a 4 p.m. opening puck drop from South Burlington, Vt.

Senior goaltender Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) turned aside 23 of 24 shots on goal in the contest for the Hawks while his counterpart Marshall Murphy made 55 saves on 56 shots on target.

The Purple Knights grabbed a 1-0 lead at 8:32 of the second period as Ashton Allain collected a pass at the top of the slot and fired a wrist shot into the lower right corner of the goal, beating Howard for the game's opening tally.

Junior Jac Cordeiro (Barnstable, Mass.) netted his first goal of the season, tying the contest at 7:25 of the third period. Classmate Leonard Brochu III (Concord, N.H.) fired a wrist shot from the point that went just wide of the goal. Freshman Garrett Alberti (Wilmington, Mass.) sent the rebound off the end board to Cordeiro in the slot and his one-time shot beat Murphy. The assist for Brochu III is the first of his collegiate career.

The Hawks had a golden chance to win the contest in overtime. With the goaltender pulled due to a delayed penalty, senior Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) fired a shot from the faceoff circle that Murphy turned aside with the rebound finding junior Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) but Murphy made a sprawling stop on that shot attempt as well.

Senior Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) rang a shot off the post on the ensuing power play in overtime but the shot attempt stayed out of the goal.

In the contest, the Hawks put 56 shots on goal compared to 24 for the Purple Knights. Schwartz led the Hawks with nine shots on goal in the tilt. Saint Anselm also held a 38-34 in faceoffs in the contest.
