PREVIEW: Women's basketball to open NE10 slate against Bentley, Adelphi

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team is set host Bentley University on Wednesday, Nov. 16 and Adelphi University on Saturday, Nov. 19 to open the team's Northeast-10 Conference slate.

The Hawks split a pair of games in the Saint Anselm Challenge to open the 2022-23 slate, dropping the season-opener to crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire, 76-75 on Nov. 11, before posting an 87-60 win over Dominican (N.Y.) on Nov. 13. Saint Anselm will continue in NE10 play on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at Pace before a stretch of eight days without a contest.

The Falcons netted a pair of wins over Bloomfield and Caldwell on Nov. 11 and Nov. 12 to open its season. Bentley grabbed a 75-47 win over Bloomfield before downing Caldwell by a 64-53 score. The team is back in action following the trip to the Hilltop on Tuesday, Nov. 22 in game four of six consecutive road games to open the 2022-23 campaign.

The Panthers suffered a 10-point loss to Post University on Nov. 11 in their season opener, falling by a 59-49 score. Adelphi will head to the University of New Haven on Wednesday, Nov. 16 in its conference opener before coming to Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Junior Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) led the Hawks in the opening weekend with an average of 24.0 points per game, second most in the NE10 in the early going. The junior opened with 27 points against the Penmen before adding 21 on six-of-nine shooting in the win over the Chargers.
  • Turco is also leading the team with 15 rebounds, 12 of which have come on the defensive glass, good for an average of 7.5 per game. Turco leads the Hawks with three steals.
  • Senior Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) ranks second on the squad with an average of 13.5 points per game with sophomore Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) and senior McKenzy Ouellette (West Newfield, Maine) adding 10.5 and 10.0 points per game respectively.
  • Robles and Hoyt have pulled down double-digit rebounds this season with 12 going to Robles and 11 going to Hoyt.
  • Senior Macy Spinks (Luton, England) has dished a team-high 10 assists through the opening weekend. Spinks registered 10 points and added seven helpers in the team's narrow loss to Southern New Hampshire.
  • As a team, the Hawks are shooting at a rate of 52.2% while limiting opponents to 37.8% from the floor. From beyond the arc, the squad holds a blistering 60.7 three-point percentage.
SCOUTING BENTLEY
  • Bentley entered the season at No. 13 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Poll. According to the most recent D2SIDA women's basketball poll, the Falcons are ranked No. 9 in the National Poll and hold the top spot in the East Region.
  • Maggie Whitmore and Ella Thompson lead the Bentley offense with scoring averages of 12.5 and 10.5 per game.
  • Whitmore is averaging 9.0 rebounds per game which is eighth most in the conference through the opening weekend. Julia Elie ranks second on the Falcons with an average of 7.5 rebounds per contest. Elie has a total of 15 boards with 12 coming on the offensive side of play.
  • Whitmore is also leading the Falcons with 3.0 steals per game and 3.5 assists per contest. Brooke Obar follows closely in the assists per game category, holding a 2.5 ratio in that metric.
  • The Bentley offense is shooting at 40.6% from the floor in its first two games, averaging just under 70 points per game. They are limiting opponents to a 32.8 field goal percentage.
SCOUTING ADELPHI
  • Ty'zhea Hawking canned 19 points in the Panthers' loss to Post while Jenna Jordan added 12 points for the offense in that contest.
  • Jordan grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, coming from five on both sides of the ball. Lauren Hammersley grabbed five boards against the Eagles which was second most on the team.
  • Hawkins and Sydney Rosenoff tied for a team-high six assists in the season opener, part of a group who had 15 in the contest.
  • Rosenoff added six steals to lead the Panthers defense. Adelphi forced Post into 20 turnovers, 11 of which came by steal.
  • Adelphi is draining shots from the floor at 31.7% while the defense is allowing shots at 29.1%.
ALL-TIME vs. BENTLEY, ADELPHI
  • The Hawks and Falcons are meeting for the 95th time in the all-time series. Bentley enjoys a 79-15 record against Saint Anselm in women's basketball.
  • The programs met twice during the 2021-22 regular season with Bentley taking both meetings. The team's most recently met on Feb. 22, 2022 at Bentley with the hosts grabbing a 73-62 win.
  • Saint Anselm and Adelphi will be battling for the 15th time in the series on Saturday. The Hawks are 10-4 against the Panthers.
  • The squads battled to a 63-60 win for the Panthers on Jan. 15, 2022 which snapped a five-game win streak in the series for the Hawks.
