MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Maggie Malloy (Canton, Mass.) scored a hat trick for the nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team on Saturday, fueling a 5-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State University at Grappone Stadium.
Saint Anselm, ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division II, moves to 4-4 overall and to 3-1 versus Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Southern Connecticut State falls to 3-6 on the year, having lost three of its first five games in the conference.
Malloy scored the first, third and fifth goals for the Hawks, recording the first hat trick for Saint Anselm since Hannah Friend '20 scored three times against Mercy (N.Y.) on Oct. 23, 2019. Opening the scoring just 2:27 into the tilt, she scored her team's fifth and final goal in the 21st minute.
Junior Shannon Walsh (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored the second goal for Saint Anselm and senior Shelby Dunn (Yarmouthport, Mass.) tucked home the fourth marker of the afternoon for the hosts. Senior Avery Tucker (Westbrook, Maine) secured assists on two of the goals and sophomore Abby Breznyak (Oakland, Maine) had a helper on Walsh's tally.
The Hawks midfield and defensive units kept the Owls without a shot until the fourth quarter. Saint Anselm netminder Sidney Falterer (Fairfield, Conn.), who entered the game at halftime to make her season debut, was forced to make five saves to preserve the shutout.
Junior Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine) started the game in goal for Saint Anselm and was not forced to make a save. Southern Connecticut State goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parent made 11 saves on 16 shots.
Saint Anselm, who has conceded zero regulation goals across five games since Saturday, Sept. 10, heads to Bentley this Wednesday, Oct. 12 for a 7 p.m. contest.
