Women's soccer advances to NE10 Semifinals with 2-1 win over Southern Conn. St.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College women's soccer team advanced to the Northeast-10 Conference Semifinals after downing Southern Connecticut State University by a 2-1 score on Sunday.

The fifth-seeded Hawks improve to 10-6-1 on the season while the fourth-seeded Owls drop to 7-7-3.

For the second consecutive season, the Hawks will head to the College of Saint Rose for their NE10 Semifinals round match. The contest will be on Thursday, Nov. 3 with the start time to be determined.

Saint Anselm has qualified for the conference semifinals for the second consecutive season. The last time the women's soccer program has reached that feat were in the 1994 and 1995 campaigns. The Hawks have posted at least 10 wins in back-to-back seasons which has not been done since the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

Sophomore Erin Rutherford (Ashburnham, Mass.) and junior Olivia Gotobed (North Andover, Mass.) netted one goal each for the Hawks in the Quarterfinal match.

Senior Kate Macaluso (Malverne, N.Y.) turned aside seven shots on goal in the win for the Hawks while her counterpart, Abigail Allen made one save.

Southern Connecticut State jumped on the board first as Kelsie Burr sent a long shot into the upper half of the goal, beating Macaluso in the fifth minute.

The Hawks would respond with a goal in the 13th minute as Rutherford collected a loose ball inside the Owls 18-yard box. She would gain clearance from the defense and fire a shot that snuck into the right corner of the goal to knot the score at one.

Saint Anselm grabbed a 2-1 lead on a goal by Gotobed in the 35th minute. Sophomore Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) sent a pass into the box for Gotobed who redirected the play by Allen in the back of the net.

The Owls had a great chance to tie the match in the 84th minute as Alexie Rosado fired a left footed shot that Macaluso got a hand on. However, the carom would get by her and bounce off the crossbar out stay out of the goal, which kept the contest at 2-1.

The Owls held a 17-5 edge in shot attempts including an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Southern Connecticut State was awarded five corner kicks to two for Saint Anselm.
