PREVIEW: Women's soccer meets Southern Conn. St. in NE10 Quarterfinals

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The fifth-seeded Saint Anselm College women's soccer team heads to the fourth-seed, Southern Connecticut State University, for a Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals Round match on Sunday, Oct. 30.

The match from New Haven, Conn. is slated for a 1 p.m. start and the winner will go on to face the winner of the top-seed the College of Saint Rose and the eighth-seed Southern New Hampshire University in the Semifinals Round on Thursday, Nov. 3.

The Hawks posted a 1-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State in the regular season finale on Oct. 26 to improve to 9-6-1 overall and 5-6-1 in conference matches. The team was tied with Bentley University in the standings but the win over the Owls gave the Hawks the fifth seed due to the results vs. the highest seeded teams tiebreaker.

The Owls concluded the regular season with a 7-6-3 record and a 5-3-3 mark in NE10 play after suffering the 1-0 loss to Saint Anselm. The team's 18 points earned them the fourth seed for the conference postseason.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Saint Anselm posted one of its finest starts in program history in 2022, becoming just the second team in program history to win each of its first four matches. The team was receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches National poll which has not been done since the 1999 season.
  • Saint Anselm is making consecutive appearances in the NE10 postseason for the first time since the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
  • The team will be heading to the program which they closed the regular season against, also for the second consecutive season. The Hawks made two trips in four days to Bentley last season for the regular season finale and the Quarterfinals Round match.
  • Saint Anselm is currently ranked 10th in both the most recent NCAA Division II East Region and United Soccer Coaches East Region polls.
  • Sophomore Allison Silverstein (Concord, N.H.) netted her first collegiate goal in the 73rd minute to give the Hawks the 1-0 win on Wednesday.
  • Junior Olivia Gotobed (North Andover, Mass.) leads the Hawks with five goals and 14 points and is tied for the team lead with four assists. Gotobed is tied for the team lead with two game-winning goals.
  • Sophomore Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) is second in goals and points with four and 12 while sitting in a tie with Gotobed for the team lead with four helpers.
  • Freshman Kayli Porter (Wakefield, Mass.) and sophomore Faith Lee (North Andover, Mass.) are the only two other Saint Anselm student-athletes this season with multiple goals. However, a total of 14 student-athletes have found the back of the net.
  • The Hawks rank inside the top three in shots (223), shots per game (13.9), and assists (22) and are fifth in goals scored (24) and shots on goal (104) when compared to the rest of the NE10.
  • Senior Kate Macaluso (Malverne, N.Y.) started each of the last four games in the goal for Saint Anselm and is 3-1-0 during that stretch. On the season, Macaluso owns a 0.97 goals-against average and a 0.862 save percentage.
  • Freshman Emma Hudson (Kingston, Mass.) started each of the first 12 games of the 2022 campaign for the Hawks and posted a 1.35 goals-against average and a 0.771 save percentage on her way to a 6-5-1 record.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT
  • The Owls are ranked eighth in both the most recent NCAA Division II East Region and United Soccer Coaches East Region polls.
  • Kelsey Burr leads the Owls offense with four goals and 11 points while sitting in a tie for second with three assists.
  • Taylor Hennig is tied for third in the NE10 with six assists. Burr, Kaylee Slavik, and Alexie Rosado are tied for second on the team with three assists each.
  • Southern Connecticut State has netted 18 goals while allowing 18 to bring its scoring margin to zero.
  • Abby Allen has started all 16 games for the Owls and has totaled 79 saves, good for a 0.814 save percentage and a 1.14 goals-against average. Allen is fourth in conference in saves and fifth in save percentage. Allen ranks second in the conference with seven shutouts this season.
  • The Owls are tied for third in the conference with 22 assists this season and are second in shots on goal percentage at 0.546.
ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE
  • Saint Anselm and Southern Connecticut State are meeting for the 24th time and second time in 2022 on Sunday. The Owls are 12-8-3 against the Hawks in the women's soccer all-time series.
  • The Hawks are unbeaten in the last three matches against the Owls are playing to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 26, 2019. Saint Anselm grabbed a 2-0 win on Oct. 23, 2021 marking their time at Jess Dow Field and took the most recent meeting by a 1-0 score on Oct. 26.
ALL-TIME, NE10 POSTSEASON
  • The Hawks are making their 23rd appearance in the conference postseason.
  • Saint Anselm owns an 8-20-1 record in the NE10 postseason play, including a 1-1-0 record last season.
  • The hawks have qualified for the Semifinal Round on 14 occasions and have been in the finals twice, capturing one conference crown in 1991 and finishing as the runner-up in 1990.
