SHELTON, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie against Sacred Heart University in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play on Saturday.
The Hawks move to 3-7-1 on the season with a 3-2-1 record in NEWHA contests while the Pioneers go to 3-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in league tilts. The Hawks have a quick turnaround and will head right back to the Sports Center of Connecticut to battle Post University on Tuesday, Nov. 1 for a 3:30 p.m. opening puck drop against the Eagles.
Graduate student
Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) had a hand in all three Hawks goals as she netted two and added an assist while junior
Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.) posted one goal and one assist. Sophomore
Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) added two helpers in the contest.
Golini and the Hawks struck first with a power play goal at 16:22 of the opening period. Sophomore
Madi Ressler (Brighton, Mich.) fired a wrist shot from the point was turned aside by
Molly Elmore. However, Golini was in front of the goal and buried the chance to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Katie Keenan knotted the contest at one at 3:36 of the second period when she fired a wrist shot that went in the goal off the right post in a two-on-one.
Tulchinsky regained the Hawks lead late in the second stanza when she cleaned up a rebound off a shot from Turner at 16:19 to push the score to 2-1 through 40 minutes of play.
Sophie Lupone tied the score at two with a power play tally at 10:02 of the third frame. Lupone one-timed a pass from
Cassandra Nevers and into the back of the goal.
Golini added her second of the day at 15:48 to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead late in the contest. The graduate student buried another second chance goal, the third of the tilt for the Hawks.
A shorthanded goal by
Delani MacKay with 1:42 remaining in the contest would tie the score once again and force overtime.
The sides traded scoring chances in the extra five-minute period as the Pioneers held a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal but neither side could find the back of the net to send home a winner.
Both teams scored once on the power play with the Hawks having five chances to four for the Pioneers. Saint Anselm won 38 of 74 faceoffs in the battle.
Senior
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) made 41 saves in the goal for Saint Anselm while Elmore made 32 for Sacred Heart.
