MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team was saddled with a 3-0 loss at home against Adelphi University on Saturday.
After a thrilling four-set win over league-leading American International the day before, Saint Anselm falls to 18-7 overall on the season and to 7-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Adelphi (16-8, 7-1 NE10) has now won 10 matches in a row.
Senior Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) had 10 kills on 33 swings, posting 12 digs for the Hawks. Senior Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) had 17 helpers alongside a team-best 18 digs with senior Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) responsible for 13 digs as the libero.
With the first set tied at 22, a crucial service error by the Hawks preceded two attacking errors to put the hosts behind, 1-0, in the match. Saint Anselm hit just .026 in the opening stanza and Adelphi was not much better, but scooped up 22 digs while throwing up four blocks, including one prior to set point.
The second set score was tied at five before Adelphi took the lead for good. The Panthers hit .243 in the match, out-digging Saint Anselm by a 22-to-16 margin, to eventually capture a 25-18 win.
The Hawks trailed set three by a 16-11 score but dramatically tied the match at 19 before taking a 20-19 lead, thanks to a kill by senior Colleen Chen (Superior, Colo.). Ahead by a 22-21 margin, the Panthers fired off four of the next five points to earn the sweep.
Saint Anselm heads to Southern New Hampshire this Wednesday, Oct. 26 for a 7 p.m. match in Northeast-10 play. The Hawks took last week's non-conference meeting in four sets.
