Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Tulchinsky's late tally powers women's ice hockey to 3-2 win over LIU

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.) netted the game-winning tally with just under three minutes left in the third period to power the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 win over Long Island University in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play on Friday.

With the win, the Hawks move to 2-6-0 on the season and 2-1-0 in NEWHA play while the Sharks fall to 2-6-0 overall and 1-1-0 in league tilts. The teams conclude their two-game weekend series on Saturday, Oct. 22 with a 2 p.m. opening puck drop.

Tulchinsky posted a pair of goals while sophomore Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) grabbed the other Hawks goal in the contest. Turner added an assist on the game-winner to tie Tulchinsky with two points in the game.

Senior goaltender Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) turned aside 27 shots on goal in the winning effort and now needs just 20 saves to tie the Saint Anselm women's ice hockey program record for career saves. The Sharks net minder, Tindra Holm, made 18 saves in the goal for the Sharks.

After driving around the Sharks goal, Turner fired a shot from the right faceoff dot which was turned aside by Holm. However, the rebound chance leaked back out to the slot for Tulchinsky to bury what proved to be the game-winner with 2:47 left in the third period.

Earlier in the game, Tulchinsky got the scoring started at 7:42 of the first period as she rifled a snap shot from the low circle into the bottom left of the goal on the power play.

Turner and the Hawks doubled the lead, also on the power play at 2:05 of the second frame as the Sharks failed to clear their defensive end which allowed Turner to collect the loose puck on the doorstep and lift a shot into the back of the goal for her fourth of the season.

Carrigan Umpherville got LIU on the board late in the second period as she collected a pass from Jeannie Wallner and sent a wrist shot by Kelley in the upper half of the goal.

The Sharks would tie the contest at 3:33 of the third period as Abby Latorella managed to sneak a backhand shot into the back of the net, pushing the score to 2-2 early in the third period.

Saint Anselm lit the lamp twice in three power play chances while LIU was scoreless in its four extra skater opportunities.
