PREVIEW: Volleyball set for three-match homestand

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team brings its five-match winning streak into a three-match week, all from Stoutenburgh Gymnasium, starting with a non-conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 18 against crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University.

Following the Hawks final non-conference match of the regular season, the team will host American International College on Friday, Oct. 21 and then Adelphi University on Saturday, Oct. 22.

The Hawks extended their winning streak to five matches with a 3-2 win over the College of Saint Rose and a 3-1 win over Le Moyne College on Oct. 14 and Oct. 15. Saint Anselm improved to 16-6 on the season and 6-1 in conference matches. After the three-match week, the Hawks will head to Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday, Oct. 26 for its final road tilt of the regular season.

The Penmen are also winners in each of their last five contests after posting a 3-2 win over Franklin Pierce University on Oct. 14, improving to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in NE10 play. After making the short crosstown trip, the team hosts American International on Saturday, Oct. 22.

The Yellow Jackets posted a straight sets win over NCAA Division I University of Hartford on Oct. 15, extending their winning streak to 17 matches and improving to 20-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play. The team will play Le Moyne on Tuesday, Oct. 18 before making the trip to the Granite State. The Yellow Jackets are receiving votes in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll.

The Panthers grabbed their fifth win in conference play on Oct. 15, posting a 3-0 win over Assumption. On the season, Adelphi is now 13-8 and 5-1 in NE10 play. They will host Alliance University on Tuesday, Oct. 18 in their final non-conference match before battling Saint Michael's College on Friday, Oct. 21.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Senior Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) posted 41 kills between the pair of New York matches to lead the Hawks attack and now sits on 227 kills this season, which is good for 3.20 per set. Casey ranks third in the conference in total kills and sixth in kills per set.
  • Junior Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) and sophomore Gabby Belcher (Buckeye, Ariz.) are second and third on the team with 171 kills and 158 kills each respectively.
  • Senior co-captain Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) has 623 assists this season, which is fourth most in the NE10. She is averaging the third best assists per set ratio at 9.03. Henwood also leads the Hawks in service aces with 35, part of a team average of 2.48 assists per set which is second highest in the conference.
  • Senior co-captain Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) leads the Hawks defensive efforts with 286 digs this season, good for third in the conference. She ranks ninth in the NE10 with an average of 3.76 digs per set.
  • Junior Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) leads the Saint Anselm net presence with 55.0 blocks in 73 sets played. Wetjen has 14 solo blocks and 41 assisted, both to lead the squad.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • Ana Pimenta leads the Penmen offense with 162 kills, good for an average of 3.31 per set which is fourth in the NE10.
  • Dai Thawnghmung is the only other student-athlete on the roster with more than 100 kills as she sits with 123.
  • Sara Montefameglio and Ainsley Knox have split time as the setter for the Penmen. Montefameglio has 344 assists while Knox sits at 193. Montefameglio also leads Southern New Hampshire with 25 service aces.
  • Deanne Wilson is averaging 4.31 digs per set which is third in the conference. She has 224 digs in 52 sets played this season. She was named the NE10 Libero of the Week on Monday for the second time in 2022.
  • Alice Arletti and Pimenta are the top-two blockers for the Penmen with 29.0 and 21.0 blocks each. Arletti has four solo blocks and 25 assisted while Pimenta sits on four solo and 17 assisted.
SCOUTING AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL
  • Paola Soto Burgos is fifth in the conference with 3.22 kills per set and has a total of 219 kills this season.
  • Two-time NE10 Player of the Year, Andrea Serra Rosa, is second on the squad with 205 kills and a 3.06 kills per set average.
  • Naomi Eckert Rivera leads the NE10 with 760 total helpers in 2022. She is also the only student-athlete in the conference to have an assists per set average north of 10.00, sitting at 10.70.
  • Eckert Rivera and Perla Rosa lead the Yellow Jackets defensive efforts with 215 and 210 digs each this season.
  • Amber Williams is tied with Wetjen for sixth in the NE10 with 55 blocks. Williams sits on 15 solo blocks and 40 assisted.
SCOUTING ADELPHI
  • Lilyen McCarthy leads the Panthers attack with 222 kills which is fifth in the conference. Macarty McQueen is second on the squad with 171 kills in 2022.
  • Brenna Valsted is averaging 8.87 assists per set with a total of 532 helpers on the year. Kambel Fiser has 135 assists to rank second on the team.
  • Jamaya Harris has a team high 29 service aces while Jamie Yonker follows closely with 27 service aces.
  • Yonker is tied for the NE10 lead at 347 digs. Her average of 5.26 is the most in the conference.
  • Samantha Collins is the NE10's top blocker with 78.0 blocks. She is averaging 1.08 blocks per set with 19 solo blocks and 59 assisted.
ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE, AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL, ADELPHI
  • The Hawks and Penmen will battle for the 59th time in program history on Tuesday. Each side has won 29 matches in the all-time series.
  • Last season, the teams split a pair of meetings with the Hawks taking a non-conference match by a 3-0 score on Sept. 21, 2021 before the Penmen took the NE10 match by a 3-1 score on Oct. 12, 2021.
  • This will be the 39th meeting and second of the season between American International and Saint Anselm. The Yellow Jackets hold a 29-9 record in the all-time series.
  • The teams met earlier this season in the IVHOF Division II East Region Clash, hosted by the Yellow Jackets. American International took that contest by a 3-1 score on Sept. 10.
  • Adelphi and Saint Anselm will meet for the 18th time in volleyball on Saturday. The Panthers are 15-2 against the Hawks.
  • Saint Anselm grabbed a 3-1 win on the road to conclude its regular season in 2021 on Nov. 13.
