SPARKILL, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team was stunned on Saturday, falling to Saint Thomas Aquinas College on the road by a 1-0 margin.
Saint Anselm, ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division II, drops to 5-5 overall on the year and to 4-2 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Saint Thomas Aquinas, who was winless against the Hawks in each of the past six meetings, moves to 4-6 overall and to 2-3 versus the league.
The Hawks controlled the vast majority of the game on offense, outshooting Saint Thomas Aquinas by a 13-5 margin. It was the home team, however, that found the back of the net for the game-winner as Jasmijn Van Drunen's goal in the game's 20th minute was the difference.
Saint Anselm had a chance for the equalizer off a penalty corner in the game's final seconds as a Hawks shot attempt was denied by Spartans netminder Jessie Hohenstein just prior to the horn.
The Hawks had three would-be goals denied in the first quarter as three defensive saves were logged by Spartans defenders. Hohenstein made eight saves to preserve the victory for Saint Thomas Aquinas.
Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine) drew the loss in net for Saint Anselm, conceding the game-winning goal while making three saves.
