PREVIEW: Volleyball heads to New York to battle Saint Rose, Le Moyne

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team heads to New York for a pair of Northeast-10 Conference matches at the College of Saint Rose and Le Moyne College on Friday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15.

The Hawks posted a straight sets win over Assumption University on Oct. 6, marking their most recent contest. With the win, Saint Anselm improved to 14-6 on the season and 4-1 in conference play and have won each of its last three matches. Following the pair of matches in New York, the Hawks will host crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University in its final non-conference match of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

The Golden Knights enter play on Friday as winners in each of their last three matches, most recently downing Le Moyne in five sets on Oct. 11. Saint Rose is now 10-10 overall and 2-3 in conference matches. The Golden Knights will host Saint Michael's on Saturday, Oct. 15 after their match with the Hawks.

The Dolphins have suffered five consecutive defeats leading up to their match on Friday against Saint Michael's College. Le Moyne most recently fell in five sets to Saint Rose on Oct. 11 to push them to 5-10 on the season and 1-3 in NE10 matches. After hosting the Purple Knights and the Hawks, the squad heads to American International College on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Senior co-captain Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) was named the conference's Libero of the Week for the second time this season on Monday after posting 22 digs between a pair of straight sets wins last week. She sits on 1,198 career digs and needs just two to become the sixth student-athlete in program history to reach the 1,200 mark.
  • On the season, Belmontez is averaging 4.00 digs per set, totaling 268 through 67 sets played. Her total of 268 digs rank fourth in the conference.
  • Senior Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) leads the Saint Anselm offense with 186 kills, good for an average of 3.00 kills per set. Junior Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) and sophomore Gabby Belcher (Buckeye, Ariz.) rank second and third on the team respectively with 148 and 144 kills each.
  • Senior co-captain Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) is averaging 9.10 assists per set with a total of 546 total assists. Henwood also has a team-high 31 service aces and is averaging 0.52 per set.
  • Junior Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) leads the Hawks blockers with 49.0 total blocks, averaging 0.77 per set. She has 14 solo blocks and 35 assisted.
SCOUTING SAINT ROSE
  • Jessica Vargas leads the Golden Knights offense with 200 kills, averaging 2.82 per set and is tied for fifth in the NE10 in total kills.
  • Valeria Jorge ranks second in the conference in assists, totaling 636 this season. She is averaging 8.83 per set which is fifth best in the NE10.
  • With a total of 36 service aces, Julia Cavalcanti is fourth in the conference with an averaging of 0.53 service aces per set.
  • On the defensive side of the ball, Jorge leads Saint Rose with 232 digs, averaging 3.22 per set. Katelyn Atchinson ranks second with 173 digs in 55 sets.
  • Cavalcanti and Karleigh Fripp have 53.0 and 51.0 total blocks each respectively. Cavalcanti has seven solo and 46 assisted blocks while Fripp has nine solo and 42 assisted.
SCOUTING LE MOYNE
  • Madeleine Kennedy has a team-high 143 kills for the Dolphins, good for an average of 2.51 per set.
  • Haley Gerken has a team-high 280 assists while Margaret King ranks second with 162 helpers. Gerken averages 5.00 assists per set while King sits at 3.24 per set.
  • Gerken also leads the team with 20 service aces through 56 sets, good for an average of 0.36 per set.
  • Isabella Leslie leads the Dolphins with 237 digs which translates to an average of 4.39 set which is third highest in the conference.
  • Kayla Anstett has 18 solo blocks and 27 assisted for a team-high 45.0 blocks this season. Marie Rhodes ranks second with 38.0 blocks coming from 12 solo and 26 assisted.
ALL-TIME vs. SAINT ROSE, LE MOYNE
  • The Hawks and Golden Knights are meeting for the 25th time in program history. Saint Anselm is 13-11 all-time against Saint Rose in volleyball.
  • Saint Anselm posted a 3-0 victory over Saint Rose on Nov. 5, 2021 from Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. The Hawks have posted wins over the Golden Knights in six of the last seven matches including in each of the last two.
  • Saint Anselm and Le Moyne are battling for the 23rd time in the all-time series. Le Moyne is 16-6 in the series.
  • The programs met twice last season with the Hawks taking both meetings in straight sets. Saint Anselm posted a non-conference win on Sept. 5, 2021 before grabbing the NE10 win on Nov. 6, 2021. Saint Anselm has now won three of the last four matches against Le Moyne.
