PREVIEW: Women's ice hockey opens NEWHA play against Sacred Heart

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team hosts Sacred Heart University in a pair of New England Women's Hockey Alliance tilts on Friday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15.

The Hawks suffered a pair of loss to nationally-ranked Quinnipiac University in a home-and-home series on Oct. 7 and Oct. 8. Saint Anselm opens NEWHA play with a 0-5-0 record overall. Following the pair of home games against the Pioneers, Saint Anselm welcomes Long Island University for a weekend NEWHA series against the Sharks.

The Pioneers are 2-3-0 on the season and 2-1-0 in league games after downing Post University by a 3-0 score on Oct. 11. The team will be off next weekend and will return to play on Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29 when they host the Hawks from the Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton, Conn.

HAWKS NOTES
  • The Hawks netted one goal in each of their contests with Quinnipiac and have now netted five goals in five games in 2022. Sophomore Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) leads the squad with two goals and two points.
  • Sophomore Gracee Donovan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and seniors Devin Porazinski (Parker, Colo.) and Margaret Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.) all have one goal each.
  • Six Saint Anselm student-athletes have one assist each while 10 student-athletes have at least one point.
  • Senior Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) has made 229 saves this season and started in all five games for the Hawks. She owns a 5.81 goals-against average and a 0.891 save percentage. Kelley leads the NEWHA in total saves.
  • Kelley has made 1,269 saves in a Hawks sweater which is good for second-most in a career on the Hilltop. She needs 91 stops to tie the program record of 1,360 which is held by Amy Zappen '12.
  • Graduate student Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) needs to play in two games to reach 100 career games played as a Saint Anselm student-athlete. For her career, Golini sits on 78 points coming from 40 goals and 38 assists.
SCOUTING SACRED HEART
  • The Pioneers have netted 14 goals while allowing 10 through five games this season. Paige McNeil leads the team with four tallies and has added one assist for five points.
  • Kailey Smith and Nicole Guidi are tied with four assists which is the most in the NEWHA. Kelly Solak follows closely with three. Guidi and Solak have collected NEWHA Defensive Player of the Week honors this season.
  • McNeil and Smith are tied for the team lead with five points which is also second-most in the league. McNeil is tied for the league lead in goals while Smith and Guidi's four helpers lead the NEWHA.
  • 10 Pioneers have multiple points to open the 2022-23 season while 18 student-athletes have at least one point.
  • Molly Elmore, the most recent NEWHA Goaltender of the Week, is 2-1-0 in three starts with a 1.33 goals-against average and 0.947 save percentage. Elmore leads the league in goals-against average and save percentage.
ALL-TIME vs. SACRED HEART
  • The Hawks and Pioneers are meeting for the 37th and 38th times in program history. Saint Anselm is 24-9-3 against Sacred Heart all-time.
  • The squads battled four times in the 2021-22 season with Saint Anselm holding a 2-1-1 record in those contests.
  • The programs last met on Feb. 19, 2022 in Manchester, N.H. which resulted in a 3-2 win in overtime for the Hawks.
  • Entering last season, the Pioneers had won each of the four previous matchups but a 1-1 tie on Nov. 5, 2021 snapped that streak.
