PREVIEW: Men's soccer heads to Saint Michael's, American Int'l in NE10 matches

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team plays back-to-back matches on the road on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Saint Michael's College and Saturday, Oct. 15 at American International College.

The Hawks fell to nationally-ranked Adelphi University on Oct. 8 by a 2-1 score. Prior to the start of that match, Saint Anselm honored its class of 2023 with pre-match Senior Day celebration. The Hawks enter Tuesday's match with a 6-6-0 overall record and a 3-4-0 record in Northeast-10 Conference matches. Saint Anselm will play its final home game of the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 19 against nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce University.

The Purple Knights most recently fell to Southern Connecticut State University by a 2-1 score, snapping a pair of back-to-back ties. They are 0-8-4 on the season with a 0-4-3 mark in conference matches. The team hosts Le Moyne College on Saturday, Oct. 15 for their final home game of the 2022 regular season.

The Yellow Jackets fell to Franklin Pierce by a 6-0 score on Oct. 8 and will play Bentley University on Tuesday, Oct. 11 before hosting the Hawks. Entering play on Tuesday, American International is 1-5-5 on the season with a 0-3-3 record in conference play. The team will host Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday, Oct. 19 in their final home contest of the regular season.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Junior Ethan Northcott (Hollis, N.H.) and senior Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) were named the NE10 Defensive Player of the Week and the Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday. A Saint Anselm student-athlete has collected those two weekly accolades in the same week for the third time this season.
  • Northcott netted his first collegiate goal on his first collegiate shot attempt against Adelphi which tied the match in the first half. The Defensive Player of the Week honor is the first in Northcott's career.
  • Underhill stopped 15 shots on goal in the matches against Franklin Pierce and Adelphi. He made a career-high 12 saves against the Ravens. Underhill has stopped a league-high 74 shots on goal this season and owns a 0.779 save percentage which is second in the conference. He also has a 1.75 goals-against average in 2022.
  • Graduate student Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.) assisted on Northcott's goal and now has a team-high three helpers. He has netted three goals which is second on the team and his nine points are tied for the most on the squad.
  • Senior Jackson Bukunt (Upton, Mass.) leads the Hawks with four goals this season and is tied with Elliot for the top spot on the team with nine points.
SCOUTING SAINT MICHAEL'S
  • Jack Andrews and Drew Kull are tied for the Saint Michael's lead with two goals each and are tied for the team lead with four points apiece.
  • Cooper Goodrich has a team-high two assists in 2022.
  • Amos Schramm has attempted 20 shots, which leads the squad. Brock Martindale and Omar Alers Rivera are second and third on Saint Michael's with 13 and 11 shots each.
  • Five Purple Knights have one goal apiece and four student-athletes have one assist on the season.
  • Liam Barrett has started eight matches in the Saint Michael's goal. He has made 37 saves and owns a 0.661 save percentage and a 2.34 goals-against average. Aidan McHugh has made three starts and has a 0.552 save percentage and a 4.54 goals-against average.
SCOUTING AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL
  • Dirk Doppen has registered three goals this season for American International which is a team-high. His six points in 2022 also lead the Yellow Jackets.
  • Christian Amaral ranks second on the team with two tallies. He and Doppen have combined for five of eight goals scored by American International this season.
  • Gianfranco Lopreiato is the only student-athlete with multiple assists. He has netted a goal bringing his point total to four, tying him for second on the team with Amaral.
  • Four student-athletes have recorded one assist through 11 games this season.
  • Lucas Morales-Fernandez has drawn eight starts and has a 1.63 goals-against average and a 0.755 save percentage, totaling 40 stops this season.
ALL-TIME vs. SAINT MICHAEL'S, AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL
  • The Hawks and Purple Knights will battle for the second time in 2022 and the 60th time in the all-time series. Saint Anselm is 37-15-7 against Saint Michael's in men's soccer.
  • The teams met on Sept. 5 from the Back River Sports Complex in Bedford, N.H. with the Hawks grabbing a 2-1 win in the Community Cup match. Bukunt and junior Josue Assantha (Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo) netted the Hawks goals in the match.
  • This will be the 55th meeting all-time between Saint Anselm and American International. Saint Anselm is 34-17-4 in the series.
  • The Yellow Jackets have won each of the last nine meetings between the programs including last season's meeting on Oct. 2, 2021 from Melucci Field by a 1-0 score.
