PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team posted a 3-1 win over Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 12-6 overall and 2-1 in NE10 matches while the Setters drop to 2-12 on the season and 0-4 in conference play. Saint Anselm hosts Saint Michael's on Tuesday, Oct. 4 from Stoutenburgh Gymnasium with the match scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
The Hawks grabbed wins in sets one, two, and four to take the match by a 3-1 score. Saint Anselm posted set scores on 25-21, 25-14, 21-25, and 25-22 on its way to the win.
Senior
Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) led the Hawks with 18 kills in the match while junior
Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) added 13 kills for the offense. In the match, the Hawks posted a .259 hitting percentage including a .545 percentage in the second set alone.
Brown posted a double-double with a team-high 17 digs with senior
Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) following with 13 digs of her own.
Senior
Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) threw up 46 assists on Saturday and added 12 digs for a double-double as well.
The teams traded scores throughout the majority of the first set as the Hawks would take a 19-16 lead following back-to-back kills by junior
Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) and Casey. The Hawks and Setters would trade two-point swings to push the score to 22-20 for the Hawks and a kill by
Brielle Jones cut the Saint Anselm lead to one at 22-21. However, the Hawks would score on each of the next three points to take set one, 25-21.
Leading for most of the second set, the Hawks would record a pair of five-to-one runs to gap the Setters as Saint Anselm would lead 19-12 following a kill by Brown to cap the second scoring run. After a Pace timeout,
Chelsey James would get the scoring back in Pace's favor but six of the final seven points including each of the final four went to Saint Anselm who took a 2-0 edge in the match after a 25-14 set two.
After falling behind early in set three, the Setters rattled off four consecutive points to take an 8-7 lead. A pair of kills from Jones extended Pace's lead to four at 13-9 which forced a timeout from the Hawks. Following the stoppage, Saint Anselm posted five of the next six points to knot the match at 14 but Pace replied with eight of the next 11 to push the score to 22-17. The squads traded scores down the stretch as the Setters forced a fourth set with a 25-21 win in set three.
Three consecutive points early in the fourth set gave the Hawks a 10-7 lead. Saint Anselm slowly extended the lead to six at 20-14 after the sides swapped scores through the middle of the fourth set. Pace slowly lowered the deficit to two at 24-22 following a three-point run. However, an attack error by the Setters gave the Hawks a 25-22 set four win and a 3-1 win in the match.
