SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) scored three goals and added an assist for the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team in a 6-1 victory over host Saint Michael's College on Friday evening.
Saint Anselm is undefeated in its last five games, improving to 8-10-2 overall on the year and to 5-4-2 in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play. The Hawks move to 44-0-1 in the all-time series versus the Purple Knights, who fall to 2-13 (0-9 NEWHA) during the 2021-22 season.
Turner scored her first career hat trick in the game and finished with four points (3-1=4), giving her a four-game point scoring streak that totals four goals and four assists for eight points (4-4=8). In addition to the first hat trick for Saint Anselm since Feb. 18, 2020, four others logged multiple-point evenings for Saint Anselm.
Senior captain Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.), junior Margaret Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.) and sophomore Abigail Blair (Grand Island, N.Y.) each had a goal and an assist for Saint Anselm. Sullivan and Blair scored the first goals of their collegiate careers and senior Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) ended the game with two helpers.
Junior goaltender Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) made 21 saves on 22 shots, giving her 699 saves to extend her single-season program record. She also moves into sole possession of sixth place on the all-time career saves list for the Hawks, passing Hannah Synott '17 who made 695 stops in her four-year career.
The Hawks needed just 27 seconds to open the scoring as senior captain Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.) fired a slap shot from the right point. With exactly one minute left in the period, Turner's first goal of the game, set up by Golini and freshman Madi Ressler (Brighton, Mich.), proved to be the game-winner for Saint Anselm.
Saint Michael's had a great scoring chance at the 11-minute mark of the period as Angelina Ruiz managed to gain clearance from the Hawks defense and drove in on Kelley who stopped Ruiz's breakaway shot attempt.
Turner gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead just 2:18 into the second stanza as she made a quick move to her backhand around a defender. Sullivan's first career goal made it 4-0 for Saint Anselm after batting a cross from Blair out of the air and into the net. Junior Kenadie Cooper (Gilbert, Ariz.) picked up an assist on the play as well.
After a failed clear by Saint Anselm, Saint Michael's got on the scoreboard just 4:41 into the game as Grace Canterbury picked up the loose puck and scored from close range.
Turner completed the hat trick at 9:03 of the second period, knocking a loose puck in front of the Saint Michael's net. Blair rounded out the scoring for the Hawks just 1:37 into the final stanza, firing a one-timer home off a pass from Sullivan in the left circle for her first collegiate marker.
Saint Anselm and Saint Michael's take to the ice once again on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 4 p.m. from Cairns Arena.
