GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team fell to Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon, 63-60.
The Hawks fall to 8-6 on the season with a 4-3 mark in league contests while the Panthers improve to 5-8 overall and 3-5 in the NE10. Saint Anselm returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 19 when New Haven comes to the Hilltop for a 5:30 p.m. opening tip.
Senior
Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) led all players with 25 points. Steinman added six boards, four assists, three steals, and a block to her stat line. Sophomore
Alexa Quirolo (New Rochelle, N.Y.) added 12 points off the bench while freshman
Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) chipped in 11 points. Freshman
Katie Lemanski (Haymarket, Va.) finished with a game-high six assists.
Steinman secured sole possession of seventh place in the all-time scoring list while also eclipsing the 150 career steals and the 300 assists marks. The senior is the 10th Saint Anselm student-athlete to reach 300 career assists.
The teams traded scores early and the Hawks grabbed an 8-7 lead with 6:06 left in the opening quarter on a layup by sophomore
Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.). However, a 7-1 run by the Panthers powered them to a 14-9 lead with just under two minutes remaining the in the first 10 minutes.
Steinman and Quirolo combined to close the quarter with five of the final seven points as Adelphi took a 16-14 lead at the end of the quarter.
Adelphi would control the contest in the second quarter and open a double-digit lead on a three by
Kaitlyn O'Connell with 4:17 left in the quarter. The Hawks managed to cut the deficit to seven on a pair of free throws by senior
Stephanie Jankovic (Averill Park, N.Y.), but a layup in the closing seconds by
Emily Miccile sent the teams to the break with Adelphi leading 37-28.
The hosts continued to extend the lead in the third frame as they led by 12 points on three different occasions, marking the largest lead the contest would see. Steinman sunk a trey in the final minute of the quarter which pushed the score to 50-42 but another last second shot would go for Adelphi, who held a 10-point advantage through three quarters.
Adelphi maintained its advantage through the opening minutes of the final quarter but the Hawks battled behind an 11-3 run that pushed the score to 61-60. Steinman, Quirolo, and Turco each netted a three pointer on the run that spanned 3:46.
With just 2:09 left in the contest, the Hawks were in search of the go-ahead bucket but they could not find it as the Adelphi defense forced two turnovers down the stretch to secure a 63-60 win.
