PREVIEW: Women's ice hockey returns to action against LIU

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team plays its first contest in 43 days as the Hawks welcome Long Island University to the Hilltop for a weekend pair of contests on Friday, Jan. 14 and Saturday, Jan. 15.

The Hawks last time out came on Dec. 2, 2021, resulting in a 4-3 win over Brown University. With the win, Saint Anselm improved to 6-10-1 with the win and closed out the fall semester with back-to-back wins over Dartmouth and Brown. The Hawks are 3-4-1 against New England Women's Hockey Alliance foes headed into the spring semester. After the weekend series with LIU, the Hawks head to Saint Michael's College for a weekend pair with the Purple Knights on Friday, Jan. 21 and Saturday, Jan. 22.

The Sharks split a two-game series with Mercyhurst University, falling by a 4-2 score on Jan. 7 before capturing a 3-2 win on Jan. 8. LIU is now 12-9-1 on the season and is unbeaten in NEWHA play at 10-0-0. The Sharks have the following weekend off before continuing their eight-game road trip at Saint Michael's on Friday, Jan. 28 and Saturday, Jan. 29.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • Senior captain Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.), sophomore Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.), and senior alternate captain Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) lit the lamp for the Hawks in the 4-3 win over Brown. Meyers netted the first and third goals while McCaffery and Golini found the second and fourth goals. Golini's tally at 11:56 of the third period was the final goal of the contest, crediting her with the game-winner.
  • Meyers currently leads the team in scoring with six goals while Golini, McCaffery, and freshman Gracee Donovan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) are tied for second on the squad with four goals.
  • Sophomore Brinna Martin (St. Michael, Minn.) has a team-high seven assists while Meyers has assisted on six goals. Meyers also leads the team in points with 12 (6-6=12) points. Sophomore Claire Weber (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) have five helpers this season.
  • Junior Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) has started 11 games for the Hawks. She holds a 3.09 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage. Kelley made 37 saves against Brown, which extended her program record for saves in a season, notching 593 so far across her first 16 games on the Hilltop.
  • In the most recent USCHO.com National poll, three of the Hawks non-conference opponents sit inside the top-10. In its first season playing exclusively against National Collegiate level competition, Saint Anselm has captured wins over teams in three conferences, including Hockey East, ECAC Hockey, and the NEWHA.
  • The Hawks are 7-77 on the power play this season, converting at 9.1% while they have killed off 84.4% of their penalties. Saint Anselm has been shorthanded on 77 occasions, allowing 12 goals in those scenarios.
SCOUTING LONG ISLAND
  • The Sharks swept the NEWHA weekly awards on Tuesday as Carrigan Umpherville was named the Player of the Week, Alva Johnsson collected the Defensive Player of the Week, Tindra Holm grabbed the Goaltender of the Week, and Maggie Korneta claimed the Rookie of the Week accolades.
  • Umpherville is tied for second in the conference with teammate Megan Bouveur as both have netted nine goals this season. Jeannie Wallner ranks second on the team and fourth in the NEWHA with eight goals.
  • Bri Eid is second in the NEWHA with 11 assists. Wallner has nine assists which is good for a tie for fourth in the conference while Umpherville sits in third on the team with eight helpers.
  • Umpherville and Wallner sit in a tie for second in the NEWHA with 17 points each. Bouveur is fourth with 16 points.
  • Holm is second in the conference with a 1.87 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage. Holm joins Kelley as the only goaltenders with over 500 saves on the season. Holm is 11-6-1 in 18 starts this season.
  • The Sharks have netted 14 power play goals in 73 opportunities, converting at 19.2%. The team is killing penalties at 88.9% (5-45).
ALL-TIME SERIES vs. LONG ISLAND
  • The weekend series marks the eighth and ninth meetings all-time between the Hawks and Sharks. LIU holds a 4-3 advantage in the series.
  • Earlier this season, the teams played a pair of contests at the Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, N.Y. LIU took both games of the set on Nov. 19 and Nov. 20 by 5-1 and 3-2 scores. The second game went to overtime after the Sharks scored late in the third period and in the final minute of overtime to secure the win.
  • Saint Anselm captured wins in each of the first three meetings but have fallen in the last four contests. Three of the losses have come by two goals or less.
