Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Gotobed's overtime goal lifts women's soccer over Assumption, 2-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Olivia Gotobed (North Andover, Mass.) tallied the game-winning goal in double overtime as the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over Assumption University in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Hawks open the season with a 1-0 record while the Greyhounds fall to 1-1. Saint Anselm returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 12 when they host the reigning Northeast-10 Conference champions, Saint Rose at 3 p.m.

The teams fought for momentum and control throughout the first overtime period which did not result in many chances for either side. However, with the Hawks controlling most of the play early in the second overtime, they forced a turnover in the defensive half. Freshman Riley Digilio (Danvers, Mass.) sent the ball forward for Gotobed who made a move on a defender in a one-on-one and beat an attacking Walsh to close out the contest in dramatic fashion.

Earlier in the contest, Saint Anselm nearly found the scoreboard with about 15 minutes remaining in the first half as Gotobed found open space inside the 18-yard box. A diving save by Assumption's Julia Walsh kept the contest tied.

The Hawks continued to apply pressure and tallied the first goal of the game just minutes later. Digilio served a ball from the right side of the box to senior Regan Pratt (Newburyport, Mass.), who redirected the service to freshman Erin Rutherford (Ashburnham, Mass.). She fired a shot toward goal that managed to beat Walsh and roll into the bottom left of the goal to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead, earning the first career assist and goal for Digilio and Rutherford, respectively.

Saint Anselm earned three strong chances in the early minutes of the second half as a header by junior Grace Foley (Middleton, Mass.) was saved. Gotobed followed that attempt minutes later with a chip shot that sailed high from the six-yard box. A spectacular save was made by Walsh as junior Kathryn White (Georgetown, Mass.) took a free-kick from 25 yards out. Walsh made a leaping save and just redirected the ball over the crossbar.

In the final 15 minutes, Diana Bruggeman found open space and sent a high floater towards the goal which deflected off the crossbar, keeping the score at 1-0 for the hosts. In the 84th minute, the Greyhounds tied the score as Annie Irwin found free space down the left sideline and drove to goal from about midfield. She pulled away from her defenders and beat junior goalkeeper Kate Macaluso (Malverne, N.Y.) into the lower left corner of the goal.

Gotobed had a chance to regain the lead late in regulation time but her shot went over the goal frame. That would force overtime with the teams locked at one.

Macaluso earned her first collegiate victory in net for Saint Anselm, making one save on two shots on goal. Walsh made six saves on eight shots on goal in the loss. She falls to 1-1.

The Hawks out-shot the Greyhounds by a 15-8 margin with an 8-2 differential in shots on frame. Assumption held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.), Alyssa McColl (Stoughton, Mass.), Ceirra Merritt (Beverly, Mass.), Sydney Wnek (Haverhill, Mass.), Cricket Good (Newburyport, Mass.), Tara McCleary (Quincy, Mass.), Anna Rigby (Marblehead, Mass.), Allison Silverstein (Concord, N.H.), Rutherford, and Digilio made their collegiate debuts in the contest.
