PREVIEW: Women's soccer hosts Assumption in 2021 season opener

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's soccer team begins its 2021 season on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at Melucci Field. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The Hawks are opening the season against a Northeast-10 Conference foe in Assumption. However, this contest is considered non-conference. Saint Anselm earned a 3-1 win in the spring of 2021 over Franklin Pierce in its most recent action. Juniors Kathryn White (Georgetown, Mass.) and Grace Foley (Middleton, Mass.) scored along with senior Marissa Greene (Lowell, Mass.) in the win over the Ravens.

The Greyhounds opened the 2021 season on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Holy Family. Assumption finished the 2019 season with a 7-4-5 record. They played to a draw in each of their final four contests of the season and finished ninth in the conference.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Saint Anselm was picked to finish 10th in the Northeast-10 Conference preseason coaches' poll. They enter the season with a roster of 28 student-athletes, including two goalkeepers. Of those rostered, only seven are returners from the 2019 season. 20 players were rostered during the spring contest against Franklin Pierce.
  • Senior tri-captain Liz Shaievitz (Lynnfield, Mass.) returns as the team's leading goal scorer after posting two goals and one assist for five points. Shaievitz appeared in 16 games in 2019.
  • Classmate Regan Pratt (Newburyport, Mass.) added one goal and one assist for three points. She appeared in 13 games, earning seven starts.
  • Midfielder and junior tri-captain Megan Nguyen (Dudley, Mass.) started in all 17 games as a freshman. She registered eight shots with three on goal.
  • White is the final tri-captain and transferred to the Hilltop from Sacred Heart University. She appeared in all 19 games, drawing 18 starts from the midfield. The junior registered one assist and 18 shots.
  • Seniors Olivia Maier (Sherborn, Mass.) and Travis Pratt (Newburyport, Mass.) will be key in the defensive unit for the Hawks. Maier appeared in seven games while Pratt saw time in 12 games.
  • Under the guidance of Head Coach Joel Bancroft, the Hawks had their best start to a season in program history at 3-0-2 to open 2019. The Hawks tied Goldey-Beacom, 0-0, to open the season before earning their first win by a 1-0 score against Holy Family. The Hawks earned a 3-1 win over Saint Thomas Aquinas and then tied Saint Rose, 1-1. Saint Rose was a NCAA Championship Tournament semi-finalist. Saint Anselm earned a 4-1 win over Post in their home opener to round out the five game stretch.
  • The Hawks closed the 2019 season with a 7-3-7 record overall and a 4-3-6 record in NE10 play.
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
  • Assumption has 30 student-athletes on their roster for the 2021 season, including three goalkeepers. They are returning 13 from the 2019 roster and 15 from their 2020 roster.
  • The Greyhounds were selected to finish 11th in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Diana Bruggeman registered the first goal of the season for the Greyhounds in the 52nd minute.
  • A long shot, roughly 30 yards, by Carly Sevigny doubled the lead for Assumption in the 79th minute for her first career goal.
  • Julia Walsh did not face a shot on goal, earning the shutout. Holy Family registered just three shots in the contest.
  • Bruggeman and Sevigny both registered unassisted goals. As a team, the Greyhounds fired nine shots with five shots on goal.
  • Annie Irwin recorded two shots, both on goal. Julia Sferlazza and Micaela Robinson earned shots for Assumption in the contest.
  • This is the second consecutive season the Greyhounds have won their season opener.
ALL TIME vs. ASSUMPTION
  • This marks the 20th meeting all-time between the Hawks and Greyhounds.
  • Assumption holds a 10-7-2 record over Saint Anselm.
  • The last meeting came in Worcester, Mass. during the 2019 season which resulted in a 2-1 win for the Greyhounds.
  • A 3-2 win in 2018 was the last time the Hawks earned a win in the matchup.
  • Assumption has won six of the last seven meetings. Prior to that stretch, the Hawks held a 4-0-2 record, including a stretch of three straight wins.
  • The teams will meet more than once this season for the second time in the matchup's history. The schools met twice during the 2015 season.
