PREVIEW: Volleyball to start three-game home slate vs. Pace

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team returns home to host Pace on Friday, Oct. 1 in the first of three consecutive home matches. It is the team's first match at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium since Sept. 14 against Mercy.

The Hawks closed September with a 3-0 loss to Bentley, 26-24, 25-19, 25-23. The team is 9-4 overall and 0-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Saint Anselm set a program record for most consecutive set wins at 16 after winning the first frame against East Stroudsburg on Sept. 10. The Hawks wrap-up non-conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 6 when Bridgeport comes to the Hilltop.

Pace fell in straight sets to Saint Rose on Tuesday, Sept. 28. The Setters fell by 25-19, 25-14, and 25-22 set scores. Pace is 1-7 entering the match on Friday with a 0-2 mark in league contests.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • The Hawks have lost back-to-back matches by 3-0 scores to Stonehill and Bentley, marking the second time this season they have lost consecutive matches. In the most recent match against Bentley, freshman Gabby Belcher (Buckeye, Ariz.) led the offense with eight kills.
  • Junior Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) threw up 24 assists and has registered at least 20 in every match this season. She is averaging 9.54 per set, which ranks fifth in the conference. Henwood was named the NE10 Setter of the Week on Sept. 14.
  • Junior Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) led the defensive efforts with 15 digs while chipping in seven kills for the offense. Casey is averaging 2.95 kills per set and leads the team with a total of 115 kills. Casey is third on the team in digs with 122, good for 3.13 per set. Casey collected her first NE10 Player of the Week accolade on Sept. 14.
  • Sophomore Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) is tied for second in the conference, averaging 1.00 blocks per set. She has totaled 41 (18 solo, 22 assisted) blocks this season. Junior Lois Dogbe (Winchester, Calif.) and sophomore Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) had two service aces each against Bentley. Brown is fifth in the conference in aces per set with .47. The Hawks have 95 service aces and rank 14th in Division II with 2.32 per set.
  • The East Stroudsburg match is the only match that has not been completed in straight sets. Saint Anselm is 5-0 at home but is 2-3 on the road and 2-1 in neutral site competitions.
  • Saint Anselm and Pace have both played Mercy, Felician, and Post in non-conference matches this season. The Hawks are 3-0 against these opponents and have a 9-0 set score while Pace is 1-2 and was 6-8 in total sets.
SCOUTING PACE
  • The Setters dropped both matches on their opening weekend to Mercy and Dominican by 3-1 and 3-2 scores. Pace grabbed its lone win to date on Sept. 7 in a 3-2 win over Felician. The Setters are riding a five-match losing skid, with the last two matches being 3-0 losses to NE10 opponents Southern Connecticut State and Saint Rose.
  • Cydney Gardner, Madisen Lupica, and Jada Screen posted five kills each in the Saint Rose match. Georgette Cosentino had a team-high nine assists while Emily Cockell recorded five digs. Abby Robertson led the net presence for the Setters as she had two solo blocks and one assisted for three total.
  • Brielle Jones is the team-leader in kills with 96, averaging 3.43 per set which is third best in the conference. Gardner (50) is second on the team while Lupica and Screen (32) are tied for third.
  • Stephanie Sicilian and Leonarda Uljic are tied with 81 for the team lead in assists while Cosentino sits in third with 50 assists. Cockell leads the defense with 79 digs and Robertson leads the team with 16 total blocks.
  • Three of the Setters' matches have gone to a fifth set, holding a 1-2 record in those matches.
ALL-TIME vs. PACE
  • Saint Anselm looks to extend its current win streak to nine matches over Pace, which would set a new series record for consecutive wins. The Setters currently hold a 15-10 record over the Hawks.
  • Pace won the first seven matchups starting on Oct. 18, 1997. Saint Anselm downed Pace on Sept. 25, 2003 for its first win in the series. The Setters won eight straight matches over the Hawks, starting on Oct. 9, 2005 and ending on Oct. 26, 2013, which is where the current trend started for Saint Anselm.
  • In matches at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium, the Setters are 8-6, but the Hawks are winners in the last five meetings from the Hilltop.
  • Saint Anselm won the last match on Oct. 5, 2019, posting at 3-1 win in Pleasantville, N.Y.
