PREVIEW: Volleyball opens NE10 play at Bentley

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team returns to action against Bentley on Tuesday, Sept. 28 in Northeast-10 Conference action. The match will be played in Waltham, Mass.

The Hawks dropped their final non-conference match before NE10 play opens to Stonehill, 3-0. Set scores were 25-19, 25-19, and 25-22. Freshman Gabby Belcher (Buckeye, Ariz.) and junior Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) had six kills each for the Hawks offense. Junior Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) had a match-high 26 assists. Junior Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) posted 18 digs, which was tops in the match.

The Falcons opened their NE10 schedule with a 3-0 victory over Southern New Hampshire on Saturday. The first set was the largest margin of victory at five points. The second and third sets were two point contests and the second set went to extra points. Ellie Wheeler was tied for the match-high with 13 kills. Ingrid Murphy added 12 kills for the Falcons offense. Amanda Parker threw up 30 assists. Wheeler, Murphy, and Parker all had double-doubles as Wheeler had 18 digs while and Parker and Murphy had 12 and 11 digs.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS
  • The Hawks registered 12 straight-set victories before falling in three sets to Stonehill.
  • Saint Anselm is 5-0 when playing at home but are 4-3 (2-2 away, 2-1 neutral) in matches away from Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
  • Casey and sophomore Audrey Simmons (North Hampton, N.H.) are both over 100 kills for the season as Casey is at 107 and Simmons sits at 101. Casey is averaging 2.97 kills per set.
  • Henwood leads the Hawks with 370 assists, averaging 9.74 assists per set, which ranks fourth in the conference. She posted a new career-high with 49 assists in the five-set match against East Stroudsburg.
  • The Hawks have posted 90 service aces, averaging 2.37 per set. Sophomore Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) has 20 to lead the team. Saint Anselm is fourth in the NE10 in total service aces.
  • Belmontez is averaging exactly four digs per set to the lead the Hawks. She has 152 total digs.
  • Sophomore Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) is leading the Hawks net-front presence with 18 solo blocks and 18 assisted for 36 total blocks.
  • The Hawks are leading the conference in hitting percentage (.247), assists per set (12.05), and service aces per set (2.26).
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
  • Bentley dropped its first four matches of the season to Oklahoma Christian, St. Mary's (Texas), and Lubbock Christian. Since the return from the Oklahoma trip, the Falcons are 5-2.
  • Wheeler leads the offense with 126 kills. Wheeler is averaging 3.50 kills per set which ranks second in the conference. Murphy ranks second with 110.
  • Parker has posted 352 assists with a match-high of 44 against St. Mary's. She threw up at least 23 assists in every match and have gone over 40 twice.
  • Jazzy Burke is the team leader in digs with 172. Burke averages 4.41 digs per set which ranks fourth in the NE10. Murphy, Parker, and Wheeler all have been credited with over 100 digs on the season.
  • Shannon Ngo has two solo blocks and 19 assisted blocks for 21 total blocks. Parker and Katie Rounds are second and third on the team in blocks.
  • Bentley ranks fourth in assists per set (11.44) and second in digs per set (17.90), both when compared to other teams in the conference.
ALL-TIME vs. BENTLEY
  • This is the 37th meeting all-time between the Falcons and Hawks. Bentley is 33-3 all-time against the Hawks.
  • The last meeting came on November 22, 2019 in a 3-2 win by Bentley. The first meeting came on Sept. 14, 1993 and resulted in a 3-0 win for the Falcons.
  • Bentley won 30 straight meetings to open the all-time series. The Hawks got their first win in the series on Sept. 9, 2017 and won all three meetings in that 2017 season.
  • Bentley has won the last three meetings with the last two matches going to a fifth set.
