PREVIEW: Volleyball travels to Stonehill

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team plays its final non-conference tune-up on Thursday night at Stonehill. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

The Hawks battled to a 3-0 victory over Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday night. Junior Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) and freshman Gabby Belcher (Buckeye, Ariz.) led the Hawks offense with nine kills each. Casey added a team-high 15 digs while junior Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) registered a double-double with 25 assists and 11 digs. Classmate Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) added 12 digs for the defense. Junior Lois Dogbe (Winchester, Calif.) and sophomore Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) each registered four blocks.

The Skyhawks returned to the win column with a 3-0 win over Bentley on Tuesday night. Abby Remick led the attack with 10 kills on 30 swings. Lauren Wilke threw up 18 assists. Carly Russell and Remick
had double-digit digs for the Skyhawks defense. Clare Freeman was part of six blocks, one solo and five assisted.

Fans attending the match at Merkert Gymnasium are expected to familiarize themselves with the Stonehill Spectator Policy.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS
  • All nine of the Hawks wins have come in straight sets.
  • Casey leads the team in kills with 101, averaging 3.06 kills per set. Sophomore Audrey Simmons (North Hampton, N.H.) has 99 kills on the season.
  • Leading the team in assists is Henwood. The co-captain averages 9.83 per set and has 344 total assists on the season. She is second in the conference in assists per set and third in total assists.
  • Sophomore Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) leads the team in service aces (20). Classmate Alina Barbarena (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Belmontez have 17 and 16 service aces.
  • As a team, the Hawks have 84 service aces which ranks 26th in Division II. They are averaging 2.40 per set which is ninth nationally. 
  • Belmontez is the Hawks defensive leader with 134 digs. Henwood ranks second on the team with 109.
  • Wetjen is responsible for 31.0 blocks (17 solo, 14 assisted). She has posted at least one block in every match this season. Against Assumption, the sophomore had five solo blocks and one assisted for six total blocks. At .91 blocks per set, Wetjen ranks third in the NE10.
  • Saint Anselm is limiting opponents to a .087 hitting percentage, which leads the conference and ranks seventh nationally.
SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS
  • The Skyhawks dropped their first four matches of the season but rebounded with five straight before falling to Daemen.
  • Remick leads the team with 103 kills on 321 swings. Basia Peragine is second on the team with 92 kills.
  • Averaging 6.71 assists per set is Wilke. She has totaled 255 through 11 matches this season. Molly Turner is credited with 94 assists.
  • Leading the defense is Russell. She is averaging 4.43 digs per set and has totaled 155 digs. Russell is fourth in the conference in digs per set.
  • Shannon Burgess is the top Skyhawks blocker. She is responsible for 24 blocks, nine solo and 15 assisted.
  • The Skyhawks are hitting at a .154 clip for the season.
ALL-TIME SERIES vs. STONEHILL
  • This will be the 39th meeting all-time between the two programs. Stonehill holds a 21-17 advantage over Saint Anselm.
  • The last meeting came on Oct. 22, 2019 and resulted in a 3-1 win for the Skyhawks.
  • Saint Anselm won the first meeting on Oct. 7, 1980 by a 2-0 score. The Skyhawks won the next eight meetings before the Hawks set the all-series record with 10 consecutive wins. The win streak stretched from Sept. 26, 1998 to Oct. 19, 2004.
  • Most recently, the Hawks have won the two of the last three meetings.
