PREVIEW: Volleyball to face off with Queen City rival Southern New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team heads to Southern New Hampshire University for a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup.

The Hawks posted a 2-0 week with a pair of 3-0 wins over Mercy and Assumption. Saint Anselm was led by junior Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) and sophomore Audrey Simmons (North Hampton, N.H.) who posted 10 and nine kills each. Junior Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) registered a match-high 20 assists and 15 digs. Classmate Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) added 10 digs for the Hawks defense. Sophomore Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) totaled six blocks in the win.

The Penmen battled to a 3-2 win over Mercy on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Southern New Hampshire won the opening set and the third set before claiming the winner-take-all fifth set. Juliana Pacini led all players with 16 kills with Grace Pierce and Dai Thawnghmung added 12 kills each. Sara Montefameglio tied a match-high 36 assists while Deanne Wilson led the Penmen defense with 24 digs.

Fans attending the match in the SNHU Fieldhouse are expected to familiarize themselves with the SNHU Spectator Policy.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS
  • Simmons and Casey have 94 and 92 kills each to lead the Hawks offense. Casey is averaging 3.07 kills per set, which is a team-high.
  • Henwood is averaging 9.97 assists per set, which ranks second in the Northeast-10 Conference.
  • Sophomore Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) is 20th in Division II, averaging .63 service aces per set. Belmontez and sophomore Alina Barbarena (Los Angeles, Calif.) follow closely with double-digit service aces.
  • Belmontez has 122 total digs, averaging 3.81 per set. Henwood is second on the team with 98 digs on the season.
  • Wetjen ranks third in the conference in blocks per set with .87. She is seventh in total blocks with 27.
  • The Hawks have won all their matches in straight sets so far this season.
  • Saint Anselm ranks fifth nationally in aces per set, averaging 2.50 per set. The Hawks are limiting opponents to a .093 hitting percentage which is seventh-lowest in Division II.
SCOUTING THE PENMEN
  • Pacini is averaging 3.82 kills per set with 107 total kills. She ranks 29th in Division II and leads the conference in kills per set.
  • Montefameglio has registered 221 assists on the season. Ainsely Knox has added 61 assists in 18 sets.
  • Montefameglio and Pacini have 13 and 12 service aces each.
  • Wilson leads the NE10 in digs per set with 5.79. She has 162 digs through the first seven matches for the Penmen.
  • Ramona Fontaine have four solo blocks and 14 assisted for 18 total blocks.
  • The Penmen are 35th nationally in opponent hitting percentage, limiting teams to .125 hitting percentage.
ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • This will be the 57th meeting all-time between the Penmen and Hawks. The all-time series is tied at 28.
  • Saint Anselm won the last meeting in straight sets on Oct. 15, 2019.
  • The first meeting came on Nov 10, 1976 and resulted in a 2-0 win for Saint Anselm. At the time, SNHU was known as New Hampshire College.
  • Saint Anselm holds the longest-win streak in the series at 13 matches, spanning from Oct. 7, 1993 to Oct. 9, 2004.
  • The Hawks have won seven of the last eight meetings, including the last three.
