The Hawks went 2-2 in the East Stroudsburg Invitational, earning wins in straight sets over Caldwell and Kutztown. Saint Anselm closed its opening night at the invitational with a five-set loss to East Stroudsburg and began the day Saturday with a 3-0 loss to Pitt.-Johnstown. The Hawks won the opening set against East Stroudsburg which established a program record for most consecutive set wins at 16.
The Mavericks are 2-4 to open the season and most recently dropped both matches in a tri-match on Saturday. Shepherd University earned a 3-1 win early in the afternoon before Goldey-Beacom earned a straight-set victory later in the day. The team is making its trip to the Queen City worthwhile as two matches are on tap. First, the team will play at Southern New Hampshire before making the quick trip to Saint Anselm.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
- The Hawks hold the top-spot in aces per set (.65), assists per set (12.58), hitting percentage (.263), kills per set (13.46), match win-loss (.750), and team service aces (68), when compared to Northeast-10 Conference opponents.
- Nationally, Saint Anselm is ninth is aces per set and 10th in total service aces. The team's hitting percentage is 19th.
- Junior Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) tallied 21 kills in the three-set win over Kutztown. Her kill total is the third-highest this season in a three-set match in Division II. Casey ranks second on the team in kills with 74.
- Sophomore Audrey Simmons (North Hampton, N.H.) is the team's kill leader with 78 total kills, averaging a team-high 3.12 per set.
- Junior Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) set a new career-high (49) in assists in a match. For the season, she has registered 262 assists and averages 10.08 per set. She has recorded at least 26 assists in every match this season and has two matches with over 40 assists. The co-captain has eclipsed 40 assists in a match 12 times in her career.
- Sophomore Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) is 34th nationally and second in the NE10 in service aces per set (.65). She is 18th nationally with 17 service aces.
- Leading the team in digs is junior co-captain Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.). She has 95 digs, averaging 3.65 per set.
- Sophomore Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) and junior Lois Dogbe (Winchester, Calif.) lead the Hawks in blocks with 17.0 and 12.0. Wetjen has recorded eight solo and nine assisted while Dogbe sits at two solo and 10 assisted.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS
- As team, the Mavericks are hitting at a .157 percentage. Tynesha Adams has the best hitting percentage at .277.
- Larissa Schneid leads the Mavericks offense with 72 total kills. She averages 3.27 kills per set on 8.91 attacks per set.
- Nilka Rivera Maldonado has double-digit kills in four matches this season. She is second on the team in kills with 58.
- Yarianna Gonzalez has posted at least 21 assists in all six matches for the Mavericks. Her season-high is 47 in a 3-1 win over Pace. Gonzalez had 41 assists in the four set loss to Shepherd.
- Gonzalez is ranked 36th nationally with 15 service aces, averaging .68 per set which is 26th in Division II.
- Gonzalez and Sophia Flanders have registered 79 digs and 68 digs to lead the Mavericks defensive efforts. Gonzalez is averaging 3.59 per set and Flanders is at 3.24 per set.
- Adams has posted eight solo blocks and 10 assisted blocks for 18 total.
- Gonzalez was named the East Coast Conference (ECC) setter of the week on Sept. 7. She threw up 83 assists in the opening matched for the Mavericks. Schneid and Rivera Maldonado earned ECC Honor Roll for the first week of the season.
- The Mavericks were selected to finish fourth in the ECC preseason coaches' poll.
ALL-TIME vs. MERCY
- This will be the 14th meeting all-time between the Hawks and Mavericks. Saint Anselm holds a 7-6 record in the matchup.
- The last contest came on Sept. 8, 2018 and the Hawks walked away with a 3-0 victory.
- After six straight wins to open the series by Mercy, Saint Anselm has won the last seven meetings.
- The first match between the schools came on Sept. 11, 1999. The Mavericks won 3-0.
- Seven contests have been played at neutral sites.
- This is just the third time Mercy will play in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
