Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – Competing in the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals, Saint Anselm College picked up a decisive 25-5 victory over Assumption College on Saturday at Grappone Stadium.
The Hawks, ranked ninth in NCAA Division II by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's Coaches' Poll, earned the top seed throughout the NE10 postseason and improve to 11-0 on the year. Receiving votes in the national poll, Assumption, the No. 9 seed, sees its season come to a close with a 2-7 overall record.
The 25 goals by Saint Anselm are the most it has ever scored in a postseason contest, breaking the previous team record of 19 goals established against Saint Rose in the 2018 NE10 playoffs. In single-game team annals, the 42 points of offense (25-17=42) are tied for the fifth-most in team history.
Averaging a program-record 18.73 goals per game, the Hawks established new single-season records in offensive points (206-128=334) and goals scored (206). Saint Anselm tied a single-season record with its 11th victory of the year, further extending a program-record winning streak extended to 14 games with Saturday's result.
Saint Anselm turns its attention to Saturday evening's NE10 Quarterfinals game between fourth-seeded Bentley and No. 5-seeded Pace, scheduled for 7 p.m. in Pleasantville, N.Y. The Hawks will host the winner of that showdown on Wednesday, May 5 at Grappone Stadium.
Senior Matt Ward (Shrewsbury, Mass.) extended his goal scoring streak to 16 games, potting four goals with a career-high four assists on Saturday. He now has 38 goals on the season, tying for seventh in single-season team history and needing two strikes to become the fifth student-athlete to score 40 in a season.
Classmate Ryan Richards (Mendon, Mass.) scored four goals with an assist, logging a career-high two caused turnovers. Sophomore Jack Andrews (Cumberland, R.I.) scored three times and added two assists in the winning effort. Classmate Jon Cattabriga (Barnstable, Mass.) scored a career-high two goals against Assumption.
Freshman Noah Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) had two goals and an assist while his brother, Nick Larsen (Northborough, Mass.), posted a goal and two helpers. Sophomore Jack Robinson (Wilbraham, Mass.) cashed in with two goals and two assists and senior Griffin Shoemaker (Shirley, Mass.) put home two goals and added an assist.
Saint Anselm outshot the Greyhounds, 65-to-26, and picked up 42 of the game's 65 ground balls. The Hawks also won 18-of-32 face-offs as sophomore Craig Yannone (Lynnfield, Mass.) collected a team-leading eight ground balls and also caused a turnover.
With the score locked in at one only 2:36 into the game, Saint Anselm opened up a 6-1 lead with Ward scoring four of his team's six first-quarter goals. Assumption never threatened again after the opening few minutes of the contest as the Hawks would build a sizeable lead through the middle part of the game.
With 7:55 to go in the first half, the Hawks started a streak of 12 consecutive goals, culminating with the second of two man-up goals with 2:39 to go in the third quarter. The Hawks, at that point, led by a 21-3 score and later built a game-high lead of 25-4 with two minutes to go in regulation time.
Senior CJ Hart (Reading, Mass.) performed well in net for the Hawks, improving to 11-0 on the season by making seven saves on 10 shots. He has matched the single-season team record with 11 wins in goal, most recently reached by Nick Richard '19 who went 11-5 during the 2018 campaign.
The tandem of sophomore Will Davis (Franklin, Mass.) and junior Lance Pfeninger-Racine (Dartmouth, Mass.) made four saves on six shots in relief for Saint Anselm.
Assumption was led by two goals from Nicholas Shanley. Greyhounds backstop Colin Malone made 13 saves on 34 shots, drawing the loss in net.
