PREVIEW: Women's tennis at Assumption

PAXTON, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team wraps up the regular season on Wednesday at the Paxton Tennis & Fitness Club, taking on the Greyhounds from Assumption University.

Saint Anselm brings a 2-7 overall record into the match, most recently posting a 6-1 victory over Saint Michael's on Tuesday. Assumption owns a 2-6 overall record with a matching record in NE10 play.

For the 2021 season, every team in the NE10 will automatically qualify for postseason play. The Hawks will play a First Round match on Sunday, Apr. 25 against an opponent to be determined. Seeds 9-11 will be forced to play on the road with seeds six through eight awarded the home match.

Results will be posted on the Saint Anselm Athletics website following the match.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Saint Anselm picked up a 6-1 victory over Saint Michael's College on Tuesday.
  • The Hawks came out on the losing end of doubles play, falling behind 1-0 to start the match against the Purple Knights. Despite earning a win at No. 3 doubles via default, Saint Michael's earned a No. 1 doubles win by a 6-3 score and came away with a hard-fought victory at No. 2 doubles.
  • Sophomore Sandra Rich (Beverly, Mass.) and freshman Katie Mahan (Bridgewater, Mass.) made their collegiate debuts for Saint Anselm at No. 2 doubles, forcing a tiebreaker with Saint Michael's that the Hawks led 6-4 at one point. Saint Michael's rallied from behind for their first match point of the season, winning the tiebreaker.
  • Saint Anselm would not drop a single match in singles play versus Saint Michael's, securing a forfeit win at No. 6 singles and never looking back. Senior Dominique Bolduc (Manchester, N.H.) eased her way to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles before junior Josie Hulbert (Loudonville, N.Y.) secured her first win of the season, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.
  • Senior Maikah Bulpitt (Cumberland, R.I.) was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 3 singles before junior Emily Jacy (Glastonbury, Conn.) put her No. 1 singles counterpart away, 6-3, 6-0. In the longest singles bout of the afternoon, sophomore Anastasia Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine) battled her way to a 6-1, 6-4 result at No. 2 singles to conclude the Saint Michael's match.
  • Freshman Elizabeth Janiak (Nashua, N.H.) was named Northeast-10 Conference Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. Competing at No. 5 singles last week against Saint Michael's on the road, Janiak cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 result in a match played indoors. It was the first career victory for Janiak, who is in her freshman season on the Hilltop.
  • Janiak was her team's first Rookie of the Week award recipient since Jacy was honored on Mar. 12, 2019.

SCOUTING ASSUMPTION

  • The Greyhounds have lost six of their eight matches in 2021, securing wins against Bentley (5-2) and Saint Michael's (7-0). Most recently, Assumption fell by a 7-0 margin at Franklin Pierce on Monday, Apr. 19.
  • In the most recent complete season of 2019, the Greyhounds posted a 5-7 record alongside a mark of 4-6 against the NE10. The Greyhounds most recently made the NE10 playoffs in 2018, falling at Adelphi by a 4-1 score.

ALL-TIME vs. ASSUMPTION

  • Saint Anselm leads the all-time series with Assumption, 24-19. In the very first match played on Oct. 28, 1976, the Hawks secured a 5-2 win.
  • Assumption has won each of the last nine matches since Apr. 14, 2012. Prior to that defeat, Saint Anselm had won six in a row.
