PREVIEW: No. 19 men's lacrosse at Southern New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team opens its 2021 season on Wednesday, Mar. 24, heading to cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire University for a 7 p.m. showdown at Penmen Stadium.

Saint Anselm hits the road as the No. 19-ranked team in NCAA Division II, according to the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll released to start the week. Wednesday's Northeast-10 Conference game is the first contest for Saint Anselm and the second for Southern New Hampshire.

No spectators will be permitted at home Penmen athletic contests, including members of the campus community at Southern New Hampshire. Those in attendance will only include participants and those in a working capacity.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS
  • The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team was ranked fourth in the Northeast-10 Conference, according to the league's Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Led by sixth-year Head Coach Michael Sciamanna, the Hawks are presently ranked 19th in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association/Dynamic Division II National Coaches Poll.
  • In its most recent action, Saint Anselm finished the shortened 2020 season with a 3-0 record, picking up two victories over nationally-regarded programs. Saint Anselm logged a season-opening win over No. 18-ranked New York Tech to crack the USILA national coaches' poll.
  • Last month, seniors Matt Ward (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Thomas Mapstone (Andover, Mass.) earned Honorable Mention Preseason All-America honors from the USILA. In early January, Ward and seniors Griffin Shoemaker (Shirley, Mass.) were named captains of the squad.
  • Ward owns an active 11-game point scoring streak, notching 25 goals and seven assists for 32 points (25-7=32) since Apr. 2, 2019 against Merrimack. Shoemaker has logged a modest seven-game goal scoring streak entering Wednesday's affair with the Penmen.
  • Saint Anselm has posted a 21-12 record since the start of the 2018 season and has made the last four NE10 postseason tournaments.
PREVIEWING THE PENMEN
  • The Penmen trailed by a 10-4 margin in the third quarter in their season-opening contest against Franklin Pierce, but rallied to take a 16-15 win in Rindge, N.H. on Saturday. Southern New Hampshire opened the year slotted ninth out of 11 teams in the NE10 preseason coaches' poll.
  • Senior Stephen Dubois, who hails from Goffstown, N.H., checked in with a career-high five goals and graduate transfer student David Wiedenfeld notched the game-winning goal with 13 seconds remaining in regulation time.
  • The Penmen finished the 2020 campaign with a 1-2 record. Tristan Pietz, who was named to the NE10 All-Rookie Team in 2019, scored four goals and five assists during the pandemic-shortened season. Chris Valentine was his team's leader with nine goals and three assists for 12 points (9-3=12) in three games last year.
  • Southern New Hampshire is coached by Paul Calkins, the longest-tenured active Head Coach in NCAA Division II. He has registered 155 wins in his coaching career that dates back to 1989.
ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • Saint Anselm has won 16 of the first 26 meetings against Southern New Hampshire dating back to the program's inception in 1994.
  • The Hawks own a three-game winning streak over SNHU, winning by an average of 9.67 goals across that span.
  • Out of the 10 losses by Saint Anselm against the Penmen, just three (the first three meetings in team history) have been by double digits and the rest have been decided by five or fewer goals.
