NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team split Sunday's doubleheader with American International College, but made history with a 23-0 triumph over the Yellow Jackets in the opening game.
Setting the single-game team record for runs scored (23), Saint Anselm drove in a program-record 22 batters on Sunday – the prior record for runs in a game was 22, set against Bentley on Apr. 8, 2000. The six home runs slugged by Saint Anselm today matched the single-game record established against Bentley in that same contest.
Of Sunday's six home runs in game one, junior
Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) drove in a team-record 10 runs with the help of two grand slams and a two-run ground rule double. The previous record for single-game runs batted in was held by
Eric Kraut '94 – he drove in nine runs and connected for four home runs against Assumption on Apr. 29, 1994.
Sophomore
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) matched Maurice with two home runs in the first game and had three on the afternoon, giving him a league-leading four home runs and 11 runs batted in on the season. The duo helped Saint Anselm posted 15 extra-base hits on the afternoon, including eight home runs.
The Yellow Jackets pulled away in the second game, capturing a 12-7 win after the Hawks had rallied to tie the game at five in the top of the fifth inning. The Hawks connected for five extra-base hits against AIC in game two, but Saint Anselm pitchers conceded 12 walks to allow the Yellow Jackets to win their first game of 2021.
Sophomore
Brady Doran (Stony Brook, N.Y.) pounded out two home runs, notching one in each of the day's two games. The Hawks finished the day with 29 hits in 68 at-bats, batting .426 while reaching base at a .535 clip with the help of 14 walks.
Saint Anselm intends to schedule an opponent for the upcoming weekend. Details, including game dates and times, will be released this week once settled.
GAME ONE – Saint Anselm 23, American Int'l 0 (Box Score)
The Hawks opened game one with a bang as a Doran solo shot to center field led off the contest. Borrelli stroked the first of his three home runs on the day shortly thereafter, driving home senior
Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.) who notched a two-out double just prior.
The three runs would be all Hawks starter
Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.) would need. The sophomore delivered an outstanding start in his season debut, striking out a career-high eight batters and limiting the Yellow Jackets to just three hits. Classmates
Ryan Semenetz (Atkinson, N.H.) and
Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) followed with two scoreless innings, with each striking out two to lock down the win.
Junior
Drew Boli (Falmouth, Mass.) led off the top of the second inning with a booming home run to center field, creating a 4-0 lead. After some small ball, including a bunt single by junior
Nick Berry (Beverly, Mass.), freshman
Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) hit a pop up to first base that ended up scoring senior
Ben Horsfall (Westborough, Mass.) from third.
A five-run top of the fourth inning was highlighted by a Maurice ground-rule double and another tape-measure shot by Borrelli, creating a double-digit advantage. Eight runs came across to score in the top of the fifth inning, fueled by an RBI Berry single, a Clough bases-loaded walk, and the first of two Maurice grand slams.
Following an RBI single by Boli that same inning, Horsfall added an RBI double that scored junior
Dan Baker (Reading, Mass.) to create an 18-0 edge. In total, Horsfall reached base in all five plate appearances, drawing three walks and going two-for-two at the plate.
Clough plated the team's 19th run with an infield single in the top of the seventh, keeping the bases loaded for Maurice. The junior transfer quickly unloaded the bases, driving his second grand slam over the left field fence to create the final score of 23-0.
GAME TWO – American Int'l 12, Saint Anselm 7 (Box Score)
The Hawks built a 3-0 lead after the first inning of play as Borrelli and Boli smacked run-producing doubles with the latter driving in two runs with his two-out knock. Borrelli's third home run of the afternoon came in the top of the third inning, boosting his team to a 4-0 advantage.
American International rallied for five runs in the bottom of the third inning, taking advantage of three hits and a Hawks fielding miscue. The big blow in the inning was a bases-clearing three-run double by
Dalton Quinn that came with just one out in the inning.
With Saint Anselm down 5-4 through the middle innings, Doran came through with a dramatic solo home run to lead off the top of the fifth inning. The Hawks had the go-ahead run at third base with one out, but back-to-back Saint Anselm strikeouts eliminated the chance to take the lead.
American International took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning, plating the go-ahead run on just two Saint Anselm pitches. Quinn swung at the inning's first pitch, but a throwing error allowed him to reach base. The very next pitch drove Quinn in as Nazzaro came through with a double to left-center field, elevating AIC to a 6-5 lead.
Five runs came around to score in the bottom of the fifth for the Yellow Jackets, as the team utilized three hits, three walks, a hit-by-pitch, and a fielder's choice groundout after the lead-off throwing error by Saint Anselm to double up the Hawks, 10-5.
After the Yellow Jackets scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 12-5 lead, Saint Anselm scratched its way back into the game. Drawing two bases-loaded walks, Saint Anselm shrunk the lead to 12-7 and ended the game with the bases loaded.
Mason St. Pierre capped off a three-inning relief appearance with his eighth strikeout of the contest, ending the game and earning the decision.
Junior
David Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) started for Saint Anselm, allowing four earned runs in as many innings of work while striking out eight. Three Hawks relievers yielded seven runs in just two innings of work, handing out seven walks – only three of the seven runs were earned.
