MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team fell to Post University in non-conference action on Monday, 65-63.
The Hawks fall to 5-4 on the season while the Eagles improve to 5-6. Saint Anselm plays its final game of 2021 at Saint Michael's College on Thursday, Dec. 30.
Senior
Chris Paul (Highland Mills, N.Y.) led the Hawks offense with 21 points and collected 13 rebounds to cap off his third double-double of the season. Senior
Gustav Suhr-Jessen (Virum, Denmark) and junior
Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) aided the attack with 13 points each.
Saint Anselm, who led by as many as 14 points in Monday's game, saw Suhr-Jessen put home a jump shot with 37 seconds remaining on the clock, giving Saint Anselm a 63-62 lead. Post responded with a jumper of its own shortly thereafter, pushing the Eagles ahead by a 63-62 margin with 23 seconds to go.
With time winding down and needing to regain possession, the Hawks fouled
D.J. Frechette who sunk one of two free throws to give the Eagles a 65-63 lead with just over six seconds on the clock.
Saint Anselm put the ball in play to Paul, who drove the length of the floor and looked to have a clear chance at the equalizing layup. Driving right down the lane, Paul's last-second shot was swatted away by
Devonte McCall, a transfer from Franklin Pierce, as time expired.
Suhr-Jessen scored the first seven Hawks points as the team opened up a 10-point lead less than 10 minutes into play.
Saint Anselm used a nine-to-two run that stretched just under three minutes to open up the largest lead the contest would see at 14 points. Senior
Alonzo Jackson (Medford, Mass.) opened the run with a jumper before Arbuckle closed it with a jumper of his own, pushing the score to 25-11 with 6:49 left in the first half.
Over the remaining six-plus minutes, Post would outscore Saint Anselm by a 19-8 margin, cutting the lead to just three before the halftime break at 33-30.
The Hawks reestablished an eight-point cushion as Paul converted a layup opportunity, making the score 40-32 just 2:40 into the second half. However, the Eagles would respond with nine consecutive points to take their first lead of the contest on a jumper by
David Jasson with 14:16 left.
Senior
Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) converted on a layup which gave the Hawks a five-point edge with 11:27 to go. After Jasson put home a jumper, the contest was a one-possession game the rest of the way.
After Jasson hit back-to-back shots to tie the score at 48 with 8:17 left, Arbuckle responded with a triple of his own but was quickly answered with a trey by
Jordan Williams.
Suhr-Jessen and Paul combined to give the Hawks a three-point lead with 3:18 to go but
Isaiah Holmes netted two free throws and Frechette hit a jumper to give the Eagles the lead, 60-59, with 1:46 to go.
In the final 8:17 of the second half, the score was tied four times and the lead changed hands on seven occasions.
