MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Gustav Suhr-Jessen (Virum, Denmark) of the Saint Anselm College men's basketball team reached 1,000 career points in Saturday's 75-57 victory over Bloomfield College at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
Suhr-Jessen finished with 16 points and four rebounds for Saint Anselm, becoming the 54th student-athlete in the College's men's basketball history to reach 1,000 points in a career. In 99 games on the Hilltop, Suhr-Jessen has averaged 10.1 points per game and now has 1,003 points entering his team's next game on Saturday at Jefferson.
Senior Chris Paul (Highland Mills, N.Y.) scored a game-high 25 points for Saint Anselm, pulling down seven rebounds as well. He has now reached at least 25 points in three games this season and has finished with no fewer than 14 points in six tilts. Senior Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) scored 12 points and handed out five assists. Senior Matt Relihan (Lynnfield, Mass.) contributed 11 points, making two free throws and sending home three treys.
With the game tied at eight in the first half, Bloomfield capped a 12-5 scoring run with back-to-back dunks to forge ahead by a 20-13 margin with 6:59 to go. Saint Anselm shooters went cold in that span, making just two of the team's 11 field goals.
The Hawks salvaged a cold-shooting first half by closing on a 13-5 run to bring the score even at halftime. Saint Anselm made just 27.3% of their field goals in the opener and connected on just three of the team's 15 shots from beyond the arc. Bloomfield also won the first-half rebounding battle, 25-19.
It was all Saint Anselm in the second half as Hawks shooters found their rhythm, pouring home 53.3% of their shots that included six triples. Outscoring the Bears by a 47-29 margin in the second half, the Hawks pulled away with a 26-4 scoring run that was keyed by nine points from Relihan and eight from Suhr-Jessen.
Deavion Ellis led Bloomfield with 12 points. Isaiah Sparks had six rebounds to lead the Bears.
Saturday's game at Jefferson will be played at high noon.
