PREVIEW: Men's basketball to battle Bloomfield

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team will play host to Bloomfield College on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 1 p.m.

Saint Anselm is coming off a hard-fought 71-70 loss to nationally-ranked Stonehill on Sunday. The Hawks had entered that tilt with Stonehill on a three-game winning streak.

Bloomfield carries a 1-6 record into play, having lost its last four games. The Bears qualified for the 2021 NCAA Division II East Region Championship, defeating Nyack in the first round by a 71-58 margin before dropping an 81-69 contest to Daemen in the semifinals.

Fans attending Sunday's game are expected to familiarize themselves with the College's spectator and ticketing policies.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Prior to the narrow loss to Stonehill, the Hawks had secured three quality victories. After picking up a key NE10 win against No. 24 Southern New Hampshire on Tuesday, Nov. 23, the Hawks then defeated Saint Thomas Aquinas on Sunday, Nov. 28, who was receiving votes in the NABC National Poll. Bridgeport, who fell to the Hawks on Wednesday, was the top seed in the canceled East Region Championship in 2020.
  • Senior Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) scored a career-high 30 points on 12-of-17 shooting against Stonehill, connecting on five shots from beyond the arc.
  • Senior Gustav Suhr-Jessen (Virum, Denmark) had 14 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds while classmate Chris Paul (Highland Mills, N.Y.) netted 10 points with six rebounds and seven assists, tying his career-high for assists.
  • For the third consecutive contest, the Hawks have shot exactly 80% from the free throw line, making 44 of their last 55 free throws. Saint Anselm is shooting at 46.1% from the floor on the season, connecting at a rate under 40% just once, last time out against Stonehill. The Hawks, however, made eight triples in the game against the Skyhawks.
  • Saint Anselm snapped a three-game stretch of 40 or more rebounds as the team grabbed a season-low 28 boards versus the Skyhawks.

SCOUTING BLOOMFIELD

  • The Bears fell to Post University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Tuesday, Dec. 7 by a 71-65 score. Bloomfield shot 38.5% (25-for-65) from the field while cashing in on seven out of its 17 attempts (41.2%) from beyond the arc.
  • Andres Fulgencio and Tyrek Battle-Holley lead the Bloomfield offense, averaging 11.4 and 11.0 points per game, respectively. They are the only student-athletes on the roster who are averaging double-digit points per game. Battle-Holley also leads the team with 5.4 rebounds per game.
  • The Bears have gone over 70 points in two games this season while holding opponents under the same threshold just once. The team is averaging 68.9 points per game while allowing 75.6 per tilt.
  • Bloomfield is tied for second in the CACC with 3.4 blocks per game. Darin Bellinger leads the team with five blocks as the team has swatted away 24 shot attempts.
  • Head Coach Gerald Holmes is in 20th season at the helm of the Bloomfield men's basketball program. Holmes holds a record of 338-206 (.621), guiding the Bears to seven CACC Tournament Championships and eight NCAA Tournament appearances. Bloomfield captured the NCAA East Region Championship in 2011, earning a spot in the Elite Eight with the result.

ALL-TIME vs. BLOOMFIELD

  • This marks the 13th meeting all-time between the two programs as Saint Anselm is 7-5 against Bloomfield.
  • The last time the two programs met came on Nov. 20, 2019 which resulted in a 75-67 win for the Bears.
  • In the Hawks five losses to the Bears, all of them have come by single digits.
  • Two of the meetings in the all-time series have been in the NCAA Division II postseason. The Bears grabbed a 79-77 victory on Mar. 12, 2005, which was the second all-time meeting. Saint Anselm posted an 82-68 victory over Bloomfield to reach the East Region title game on March 16, 2014.
