PREVIEW: Women's ice hockey hosts Brown to close fall semester

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team hosts Brown University in its non-conference finale and the final game of the fall semester on Thursday, Dec. 2.

The Hawks split a home-and-home series with Dartmouth College on Nov. 27 and Nov. 28, suffering a 2-1 loss on Saturday before capturing a 1-0 win from Sullivan Arena on Sunday. With the win, the Hawks have now posted a win over teams from three conferences (NEWHA, Hockey East, ECAC).

Saint Anselm is 5-10-1 on the season a 3-4-1 against New England Women's Hockey Alliance teams. After hosting Brown, the Saint Anselm hosts the Hockey Training Institute in an exhibition contest on Sunday, Jan. 9. The team returns to NEWHA play on Friday, Jan. 14 when Long Island University comes to the Hilltop.

The Bears fell to Providence College in a non-conference contest on Nov. 27 by a 4-2 score. Brown is now 1-10-2 overall and 1-6-1 in ECAC Hockey play. After playing the Hawks, the Bears head to Holy Cross to close out their fall semester. The team returns to play after the break on Friday, Jan. 7 against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • Junior goaltender Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) set a Saint Anselm women's ice hockey program record for most saves in a shutout on Sunday with 47. She has also established the team's single-season record for saves with 556 to date. In the home-and-home series with Dartmouth, Kelley stopped 81 of 83 shots on goal, allowing two goals in Saturday's 2-1 loss. Kelley collected the NEWHA Player of the Week honor on Tuesday. On the season the junior is 4-10-1 overall with a .927 save percentage and a 3.10 goals-against average.
  • Freshmen Madi Ressler (Brighton, Mich.) and Gracee Donovan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) netted the Saint Anselm goals over the weekend as Ressler's power play tally on Saturday marked the first of her collegiate career. Donovan was the only student-athlete to find the back of the net in Sunday's win which now puts her in a tie for the team lead with four goals on the season, joining senior captain Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.).
  • Meyers is the team leader in points with nine, stemming from four goals and five assists. Her assists total is tied for second on the Hawks with sophomore Claire Weber (Marshfield, Mass.), who recorded the primary assist on Donovan's game-winning goal.
  • Saint Anselm has netted seven power play goals on 75 chances which is good for a 9.3% conversion rate. The team has allowed 11 goals while shorthanded, killing off penalties at an 85.3% clip.
  • The Hawks have defeated a program from three of the five conferences at the National Collegiate level. The team has posted wins over a Hockey East, NEWHA, and ECAC Hockey opponent.
  • Four of the Hawks seven non-conference opponents find themselves in the USCHO Division I Women's Poll as Northeastern, Quinnipiac, Yale, and Harvard are in the top-10 nationally.
  • On the season, Saint Anselm is 4-1-0 when playing at Sullivan Arena but is 1-9-1 on the road. Looking ahead, the Hawks have eight home games left on their schedule compared to five games on the road, all against NEWHA opponents.
SCOUTING BROWN
  • The Bears captured their first win of the season on Nov. 12, beating Dartmouth by a 1-0 score. Since then, the team has suffered five losses pushing its record to 1-10-2 on the season and 1-6-1 against ECAC opponents.
  • Shay Maloney leads the team with five goals, netting two against Providence in the team's last contest. Anna Hurd has lit the lamp three times this season, aiding the Bears to 20 goals scored through 13 games.
  • Hurd, Cassidy Piersiak, and Cameron Sikich are tied for the team lead with four assists each. Maloney and Abby Hancock follow closely with three assists each. Maloney leads the squad in points with eight while Hurd is second with seven.
  • Kaley Doyle has drawn eight starts in net for Brown. She is 1-6-1 on the season with a 2.44 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. Hayley Kliczko holds a .869 save percentage and a .869 save percentage in five starts.
  • The Bears have converted on six of their 46 power play opportunities, good for a 13% conversion rate. The team is killing off penalties at 70.7%, giving up 12 goals while shorthanded.
ALL-TIME vs. BROWN
  • This will be the third meeting all-time between the Hawks and Bears. Brown is currently 1-0-1 against Saint Anselm.
  • The Hawks traveled to Providence, R.I. on Jan. 24, 2020 and Jan. 25, 2020 for a weekend pair at Brown. The Bears captured a 1-0 victory in the first game before the teams skated to a 3-3 tie in the second contest.
  • Senior Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) recorded two assists in the tie while Meyers added an assist. The senior duo collected both assists on the equalizing goal in the third period.
  • The Hawks are now 28-28-5 against National Collegiate level competition after the weekend split against Dartmouth. Saint Anselm is 1-4-0 against ECAC Hockey opponents this season and 1-1-0 against Hockey East while posting a 3-4-1 record against NEWHA foes.
