MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team downed Le Moyne College in straight sets in Saturday afternoon's Northeast-10 Conference match.
The Hawks improve to 17-6 on the season and 7-3 in the NE10 while the Dolphins fall to 4-15 and 2-9 in conference matches. Saint Anselm, who is the 10th ranked team in the East Region, concludes its home regular season schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 9 when Franklin Pierce comes to the Hilltop.
Saint Anselm opened the match with a 25-10 set win before posting a 25-22 second set and a 25-17 set three.
Junior
Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) recorded 12 kills, which was tied for tops in the match. Junior co-captain
Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) threw up 35 assists, extending her streak of more than 30 assists to 10 matches. Junior co-captain
Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore
Alina Barbarena (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Hawks defense with 11 and nine digs each, respectively.
The Hawks tallied the first 11 points of the match and 15 of 16 to take a commanding 15-1 lead. Saint Anselm fired 10 kills, one service ace, and gained from four Dolphins attack errors to assume the early advantage. Saint Anselm would go on to close the first set on a kill by Casey at 25-10.
After a three-point run by the Dolphins to give them a 12-9 lead in set two, the Hawks scored seven of the next eight points to grab an 18-13 lead. Casey recorded three of her kills in the stretch while the other four points came from Le Moyne errors. The Dolphins battled back in the set and cut their deficit to one on a kill from
Madeleine Kennedy and a Hawks error. However, a timeout from the Hawks slowed the momentum as a Le Moyne service error and a kill by junior
Lois Dogbe (Winchester, Calif.) gave Saint Anselm a 25-22 set two win.
Saint Anselm opened the third set with the first four points and never looked back. The Dolphins got a kill from Kennedy, making the set 11-8 and that would be the closest the score would get. The Hawks put the set out of reach on a five-point run with kills coming from Henwood and freshmen
Gabby Belcher (Buckeye, Ariz.) and
Jada Burdier (Haverhill, Mass.). That put Saint Anselm on match-point and would close out the match on a kill by sophomore
Emily Pender (Sparks, Nev.).
